So I got the unit and updated the DTC codes and all went fine. then I
ran the "update program" for firmware update and it is junk now.
called Autel and was told that the update was a "bug" fix. but
that it messed the unit up and I would have to return it from where
I purchased it. fortunately I had just bought the unit and there
was not a problem with the return. the garbage update is STILL on their website
so if people update their older units that are out of warranty you
will have to send the unit in to them and pay I presume to have them
fix something they screwed up. if you have one of these or are going to purchase one,
DO NOT install the "update program". if you update the DTC codes you
will be fine.

I've used the AL510 with 4 of my vehicles so far (OBD II compliant imports and domestics). None of the whiz bang features of the AL510 that I payed for such as live data, freeze frame data, O2 monitor test or component test have ever worked. If I attempt to do anything but read/clear codes, view I/M readiness or view vehicle info, the AL510 freezes up and/or spews out random or foreign language characters until I shut it off and start over. I might as well have payed less for a tool with nothing but basic "code reader" functionality.

When I first purchased the AL510, it came loaded with V2.1 firmware. I checked the Autel site for an update, but they only had an older V2.03 available. I downloaded it for my archives anyway. A message to customer support asking about availability of an update was never answered. When I finally noticed a V2.13 update posted on their site, it turned out to completely kill my scan tool with no remedy other than shipping it to Autel for a fix (see other reviews and you'll notice I'm not the only one to have had this happen). Luckily I had archived V2.03 (Autel only posts the "latest" firmware on their web site, so good luck if you ever need an earlier revision), so I loaded it up and got the device working again by DOWNGRADING to V2.03. Once again, my message to customer support was never answered and ONE YEAR later, the bad V2.13 firmware is STILL posted on their web site (and I'm still stuck with downgraded firmware).

While working on a 1999 Hyundai Accent, the built-in DTC descriptions on the AL510 led me astray for a while. Turns out the same DTC code has several possible translations depending on the particular Hyundai model, but the AL510 only knows "Hyundai" and shows you only one of those DTC descriptions.

I've used several times, no complaints does what it says on the box (after a quick call to USA support and new version software load). If you have an intermittant problems with your car this model can be left plugged in while driving and will record frames of information when a code is triggered (great for problem solving). It helped diagnose an issue with my wife's Jeep, a new oxygen sensor fixed that.
I'd recommend taking with you on any second hand car purchase, you can check the VIN to the one on the vehicle. Also you can see if any pending codes are showing and its a good check for being emissions ready (if somebody has recently cleared codes it will show as not being ready).

A nice feature is that you can download to a PC and print test results using the Autel software. It comes with a good carry case, reasonable length cable and USB connector cable for the computer (none of the 9/24 pin serial connectors on other scanners that nobody has on their PC's nowadays and you have to buy another USB adaptor to connect).

It would be nice if it could cope with ABS as well, not just Engine and Transmission but I'm pleased with its performance. It looks very similar to the Autel MS409 that has less features, different color and lot cheaper.

Autel has come out with the MS 609 that has a few more features and ABS capability.

Do a search of Autel MS609 for more info
