Introducing the X-Star
The X-Star is a sophisticated yet amazingly easy-to-fly quadcopter, designed for superb aerial imagery. The 4K camera, integrated with a removable 3-axis stabilized gimbal, records crystal clear Ultra HD videos and takes 12-MP photos.
Powered with an intelligent flight control system, auto-pilot functions, dual satellite navigation and Autel Robotics's Starpoint Positioning System, the drone stays safe and stable, even indoors or at low altitudes.
The X-Star includes a 16-GB micro-SD card, an intelligent battery with up to 25 minutes of flight time and a 1 hour fast charger. Backed by 7-days-a-week U.S.-based customer support, the X-Star is ready to fly out of the box.
The Starpoint Positioning System measures the aircraft’s flying height and optically tracks its position. This lets the X-Star fly accurately, at low altitude, even when a GPS signal is unavailable. In addition, dual GPS and GLONASS navigation ensure solid positioning even in low signal environments.
Smart-Flight features like Follow, Orbit, and Waypoints allow you to focus on controlling the camera rather than the flight controls, while options like Beginner Mode can provide a geo-fence that limits the aircraft’s range and speed.
The X-Star is powered by a powerful, lightweight, intelligent 14.8V (4900 mAh) LiPo battery that provides up 25 minutes of flight time and 1 hour worry-free charging.
The free-to-download Starlink App (available for Android and iOS) is your portal to a whole new world.
Enjoy an HD live video feed from your 4K camera even when the X-Star is a speck on the horizon. Adjust camera settings to capture videos or photos precisely how you want them. Configure your aircraft’s flight control settings to best suit your preferences. And stay safe with the Smart Pre-flight Check to ensure every aspect of your aircraft is safe and ready before takeoff.
4K Camera and Removable Gimbal
The X-Star is equipped with a 4K Ultra HD camera that has 108 degree FOV and is mounted on a 3-axis gimbal that prevents unwanted camera movements to capture stable, smooth video footage. Take video at 4K30, 2.7K60, 1080p120, or 720p240 and take 12-MP photographs. The camera and gimbal are easily removable for replacements or future upgrades.
Clamp your smart-phone or tablet (sold separately) securely in place to enjoy the camera’s HD live view. Make informed decisions with the help of important flight information conveniently displayed on the integrated LCD screen. Command sticks provide maximum grip and confidence for agile maneuvers, while function keys instantly capture the perfect moment, or quickly activate flight-assist modes.
U.S.-Based Customer Support
Each X-Star comes backed by Autel Robotics’s 7-day-a-week customer support. Our U.S. based team looks forward to assisting you with any questions you have about your X-Star, from getting started to troubleshooting.
The X-Star is a sophisticated yet amazingly easy-to-fly quadcopter designed for superb aerial imagery. The 4K camera and 3-axis gimbal can record crystal-clear, smooth Ultra HD videos or take 12-MP photos with Wi-Fi HD Live View up to 0.6 miles away. This drone is ready to fly out of the box, and can be flown with or without the help of the free Starlink mobile app. Powered by an intelligent flight control system, dual GPS and GLONASS satellite navigation and aided by the Starpoint Positioning System, the drone stays safe and stable, even indoors or at low altitudes. Where other drones might become erratic or fly away when there is magnetic interference, the X-Star is equipped with our exclusive SecureFly technology to help your drone come back home safely.
Learning to fly the X-Star is easy: you can start the motors, take off and land, hover, or have the drone automatically return home by using the one-touch buttons on the remote controller. The controller’s integrated LCD displays critical flight information, allowing the Starlink mobile app to show fullscreen live HD video. Starlink brings a wealth of autopilot features such as follow, orbit, waypoints, and also lets you adjust camera settings and record images in flight. With the X-Star from Autel Robotics, a new perspective is just one flight away.

The X Star is a great flying camera for the money. I wish I had spent the extra cash on the Premium and you will too so save yourself the guessing game and spend extra now. But the X Star Premium.
On my first flight it was a sunny day at the beach with gusts of about 20 miles per hour. The X Star performed wonderfully and stable despite the wind. My only complaint is that even with 20 gps satellites and strong winds I quickly turned off beginner mode and still wished I could fly farther than it could handle.
My drone lost its video feed to my iPhone 6 at only about 1300 feet away! The drone initiated the emergency return to home feature at least three times.
Luckily my wife and I had watched Autel's wonderful training videos on YouTube a few times so I did not panic at all which would have been an acceptable reaction when flying and there is a possibility of loosing an investment on the first go! Fortunately the X Star did re connect before the low flight celing I neglected to change crashed into trees.
I could not fly as far as I wanted too. Buy the premium so you don't have the same wish. I'll add to this review once I fly more and gain experience but for now, on 9-2-2016, I recommend Autel. This drone made me feel comfortable right away with flying out to see the view over sand and ocean. It speaks to the fly-ability and ease of use for a new pilot. Buy the premium and don't look back. Have fun with your drone!
I bought this drone because I own a Media Production Company. We produce videos for Corporate and Private clients (including the biggest headaches of them all; weddings). I had rented drones before and let me tell you upfront: THIS DRONE IS TOP OF THE LINE.
I will give you some key points and at the end of this review you will find my recommendations.
*Differences with the PREMIUM VERSION:
As stated by Autel, the X-Star and the Autel Robotics XSTAR-PREM-OR X-Star Premium Drone with 4K Camera, 1.2-Mile HD Live View & Hard Case (Orange) are essentially the same drone.
The only difference is that "the X-Star Premium has twice the HD Live View range compared to the X-Star, includes a larger 64-GB card, and comes packed in a semi-hard, splash-proof, zippered premium case".
So, leaving the SD and the case aside, the main difference is that the X-Star has a 0.62 miles Live View range vs 1.2 miles on the Premium version. According the the FAA rules, you must always maintain a line of sight with the aircraft you're operating, so 0.62 miles (1 km) seems pretty good for me.
Buy the X-Star when the price is $499.00 as I did (it goes from $678 to $499 back and forth). The $200 you save can be used for buying the premium case (buy when $89.00 or less):
Autel Robotics Carrying Case for use with X-Star Premium and X-Star Drones, Grey
and a spare battery ($114.99 but usually gets 15% discount):
Autel Robotics Battery (Li-Po with 4900mAh, 14.8V) for use with X-Star and X-star Premium Drones, Orange
--Now, some technicalities--
This is a drone truly designed for photo and video producers. The INCLUDED camera is a 4K gimbal-stabilized camera. It produces stunning pictures and videos with its 12 MP sensor. You can move the camera up and down 108 degrees. You can't rotate it, though. If you want to rotate your recording, you simply need to rotate the drone, which is smooth and easy.
You can download the StarLink app to see in real time what the camera is seeing. This is so helpful for maneuvering the drone and also to be sure that what you actually want to record is on the frame. I'm surprised of the advances in technology we have now, this technology would have been military-only just a few years ago.
To download for Android or iOS, just search for "Autel Robotics StarLink" app:
*Stability and Handling:
This is by far the most stable drone I've had the chance to fly. I think it has to do with its physical dimensions: it has wingspan of 352 mm (13.9 in) and a weight of 1,420 grams (3.1 pounds). Since the X-star is on the heavy side, it gives the drone tremendous stability. When I first tested it, it was a windy day on a clear valley and it stood to the test perfectly.
The Handling is a breeze and you will learn to control the drone progressively thanks to the built in BEGINNER MODE, which limits your acceleration, top speed and maximum distance from operator.
*Ease of Use:
As I said before, there is a beginner mode activated by default. I was up and flying in about 5 minutes (you need to install the blades and perform a calibration on the drone. If you've ever played a videogame or controlled anything with your hands, you will have no difficulty flying the X-Star (Follow the FAA guidelines, please)
*Flight time and Payload
The included battery provides 25 minutes of flight time, which is plenty of time if you know which particular shot you want to take. As an additional note, it can carry 180 additional grams, which is not very much, but enough to transport your new shinny iPhone 7 or Samsung S7 safely. (In case you decide that would be a good use of this drone, remember that battery life is affected by increased weight: more weight = less flight time)
It surprised me how fast this drone is, given the stability it has. The X-Star has a top speed of 16.0 m/s, (36 mph), which is useful in case you want it to follow you while you surf in your yacht or ride your motorcycle. Just take into account the speed difference with your vehicle a
Note: the X-Star can operate properly in ambient temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C, or from 32°F to 104°F. Keep this in mind before attempting to record a video inside your favorite volcano.
*Make sure to turn off BEGINNER MODE after you get used to handling the X-Star. It happened to me, the X-Star kept disconnecting from the Live Feed and returning to home until I disabled this mode.
*Buy a spare battery and the flight case once they go on sale or you have the money.
*The first time you fly with BEGINNER MODE off, make sure you have plenty of open space, I guarantee, it is a whole different experience, but you need to take it slowly.
Thanks for reading this review i really hope it was helpful, and if you're still here I can only say: Rush to that BUY BUTTON and buy this amazing drone, you'll be glad you did.
Now I just need them to add a hoist under it so I can deliver pizzas.
Highly recommend this to all drone enthusiasts.
