There are many complications. One big one is their two-tier system of money, with one “low” currency for the natives and another more expensive currency reserved for foreigners. Credit cards and US ATM cards do not work there, and dollars are assessed a 10% overage in addition to the usual brokerage fees.
It is not easy to visit Cuba under any circumstance, but it is especially challenging to visit and to see the “real Cuba.” Cuban government censorship, surveillance, and government sanctioned tour companies are working, inadvertently with US Government restrictions, to extract a significant amount of your dollars without showing you very much--if any--of the real country and its people. And, if you're going to go to all the trouble to go there, don't you want to have an authentic experience?
Ms. Williams and Mr. Hatfield have provided a significant supplement to the more standard travel offerings available in book and on the web. The suggested walking tour of Havana outside the tourist zone is probably alone worth the price of the Kindle version.
if you are a looking for a guide that will give you the general tips of what to expect, what some fun things to do are, and good tips on what to do when visiting Cuba, feel confident in picking this guide as you will love it! I really hope Christine and Julian are able to do similar type guide for other locales as well!
