This is a novel that absolutely begs you to read the first before you open the first pages. The reader is immediately thrown into the action as you meet up with our band of heroes in the aftermath of a battle which took place at the end of the first book. Without an understanding of the first book, the reader is lost the instant the first chapter begins. With that being said, this book is so fantastic and over the top that it also begs you to keep on reading. There is such a variety of environments and characters that the reader is constantly being exposed to new things and wondering what wil come next. The narrative was very well written, and the author has produced a fantastic final product. I look forward to additional books in this series and other projects that this author decides to take on in the future.
The first thing readers should know is that this is the second of a series of books. Sometimes a book within a series can stand alone. In my opinion, this is not one of those stories. I began to read this book and had to back up and read the first book in the series. The Authority was just too confusing and frustrating for me to read without knowing how the characters ended up where they are as this story begins. This is one of those continuing stories where the characters are left in peril at the end of book one, with the second book picking up seconds after the last one left off. The story arc continues and at the end of this book - book 2 - we readers are again left with the characters in the book in peril and no resolution to the overall crisis.
That said, I would recommend both books to anyone who is a fan of fantasy fiction; specifically to those who enjoyed the Golden Compass. There are many parallels between that story and this one. The author is a gifted storyteller, and her universe is peopled with engaging characters. Many of the humans have extraordinary gifts; then there are dragons and other creatures familiar to fantasy readers, and still other creatures unique to Ms. Carlson's universe. Woven into the story is a battle between good and evil which involves a lot of spiritual components, and the tale is captivating - well worth the read.
A suggestion for future editions, and for book 3 - I urge the author to include a summary of the preceding books. The glossary is ok for reference, but especially with the kindle edition is cumbersome to move back and forth between the story and the glossary. A 2-3 paragraph summary would be so helpful, and would set the reader up to plunge into the action.
The Authority is the second book in the series and it will help if you read the book before this one. From the word go, the reader finds a exceptional rendition of the supernatural with roots in the reality of Christian life as we know it.
It is the first time I read a book of the author and I have no doubt that her point in her writings is one of research and conviction. Charisma, as I understand it, is a compelling attractiveness or charm that can inspire devotion towards a certain power. In the universe we are governed by a hierarchy consisting of good against evil. She places her characters in a supernatural realm, gives a description of the realms in a format of a map included in the book. Each character has a role, specific powers, and life to lead and move in the realms or place. There are the ones who can read minds, know of darkness, see beyond the masks of evil
(darkness in others). We have the innocent, the kind who are hurt in a devastating manner by the evil spirits. We see how relationships in realms where the superpowers reign, are influenced by fear of the Forsaken realm.
Ambrose is the one who lost her son Roan to death. Will she ever find him? Where will her search bring her?
“Roan, what are you talking about? Be their what?!” “Their Authority,” he whispers, solemn, blood cascading in his eyelashes, along the curve of his cherubic lips. “The Authority meant to end us all.”
The Legalia is an authority, but there is another authority .......”Their Authority”; another authority to cope with..... “perhaps due to the realms’ breakage.”
The next words are spoken at the end of book 2: “We have come,” booms the voices, multitudes and legions, the same ones that’ve been terrorizing me, haunting my every thought. They’re no longer just inside my head— they’re coming from the middle of the room. “We will blot out the sun with our assemblies, we will harvest your souls as our delicacies— we will cast the earth into unending darkness for eternity! The way that was shut has been opened.” In the book, the group Exodus represents darkness. Darkness is Unleashed is the title of Chapter 17.
Exodus , is the second book of the Bible, which recounts the departure of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, their journey across the Red Sea and through the wilderness led by Moses, and the giving of the Ten Commandments. The events have been variously dated by scholars between about 1580 and 1200 BC. Origin of word: <ORIGIN> Old English, via ecclesiastical Latin from Greek exodos.
To me The Authority could be read like the Bible. Passages are full of wisdom and enlightenment; but it needs a special reader, an open mind who can see that hurt and devastation, will come to an end and the forsaken will not triumph.
“Darkness Unleashed Come on,” Lisbeth says as she drags me (Ambrose) down platform after platform, the sloshing of the canals’ water much louder after the quake and each subsequent aftershock that hits every few minutes or so. “I found another way to the meeting hall; it’s a secret passage.” I want to snatch my hand from her grasp— no good’s ever come from using hidden passageways, especially in areas run by groups like Legalia or Exodus. They often harbor dangerous, explicit things , things I’d rather spend the rest of my time here not knowing."
“ I’ve gotten good at seeing behind the masks of evil men, at noting the instances when they’ve lost control. You see the true darkness in others because you have it yourself emanates the pit inside; always listening, always present now. You are the Authority. And our time has come..... “
“I’m not your... Authority! Leave me alone! Leave me in peace! The demon spirits laugh and I note dozens of varying tones and depths ; it could be hundreds of them. Thousands . Oh my. There will be no peace. Never again, Authority.”
A very talented intellectual and spiritual author.
