About the Author
From the Inside Flap
Most important, with Richard as my alter ego reading aloud my memoir, he faithfully reflected my enthusiasm, wonderment, pride, humility, fascination, and all those other emotions that make my story what it is.
I feel blessed to have had Richard Rieman read and produce my audiobook."
Bruce Comstock, Author of A Life in the Air --This text refers to the paperback edition.
From the Author
Who am I really? I'm Richard Rieman, and I am an audiobook narrator. I'm a performer in the theater of the mind.
I've been a professional writer since I was seven. I discovered that if I wrote stories that included my 2nd grade classmates names (on a ruled piece of paper, both sides, in pencil), they would give me 5 cents to read them. Bingo! Comic book money.
Now,when I narrate an audiobook, I quietly tell you in your headphones:
Listen to me, I have something important-interesting-dramatic-funny-entertaining-wonderful to tell you!
You're an author. Should you have an audiobook as well as an e-book, paperback, or hardcover?
In one word: Absolutely. And in The Author's Guide to AudioBook Creation, I will show you how. --This text refers to the paperback edition.

I wanted to learn more about audio books to better serve my author clients, but the thought of wading through hundreds of online resources to find reliable information always pushed this task to the bottom of my to-do list. It didn't help to read posts about new audio book companies, failed audio book companies and complaints about established audio book companies. What's an indie publisher to do?
A quick scan of the Contents page proved that the answers I needed were at hand and, more importantly, accessible in a reasonable amount of time.
This book offers a wealth of information in a lighthearted style that will keep you engaged until the very end. No boredom here! The author explains why it's so important to "Grab Your Readers by the Ears" and clearly describes the "Different Worlds of AudioBook Publishing" so authors can understand and protect their rights in this fast-growing marketplace.
He offers the "10 Best" as well as the "10 Worst" ways to find the right narrator so prospective clients can appreciate the complexity of the professional's job. I didn't know, for example, that it takes 3-4 hours of a narrator's time to produce 1 hour of usable audio, a fact that puts the cost of professional narration into the proper perspective. A voice actor himself, the author makes a very strong case for using trained and experienced professionals while offering useful tips to those who want to tackle the task themselves (Spoiler alert: Don't go there!).
A very useful feature in this book is the step-by-step guide, with screen shots, for setting up your title on Amazon's ACX audiobook distribution platform. Another section explains how to navigate options outside of ACX/Amazon/Audible/iTunes.
Then the book gets to the heart of the matter. How much should you charge for your audiobook? How much will you make? How will you promote it? How should the audiobook cover be prepared? How can you raise the money to do all this? All these questions and more are answered in this delightful little book, along with plenty of links to help the interested reader explore further.
I enjoyed this book immensely and highly recommend it. Do not release an audiobook without it.
I totally agree that writing for audio is a good plan. As a super listener of audiobook fiction, some titles do fall a little short sometimes when it comes to the audio. It reads fine in print, but in audio, its either distracting or overwhelming.
This is a good how-to title for the author that is thinking about, or on the fence about, making an audio version of their book.

As he writes, “Compared to Amazon’s twenty-five million plus titles, Amazon’s audiobook sales company Audible has just 170,000 audiobooks available. In the next five years, Amazon expects that number to grow to more than one million audiobooks.”
The details about how to create an audiobook and promote it are inside this little volume. I recommend it.
