Siblings of children with special needs often say it is difficult growing up in a family where one child, because of their challenging needs, takes so much of their parents time and energy. Most parenting books about raising a child with special needs include strategies to make the special needs child feel loved, included, and an important part of their family. We were happy to learn of another guide book for parents. This one is the handbook Asperger's Sibling Support: 15 Practical Tips for Parents/Caregivers by Trish Thorpe. It provides parents and caregivers with important advice for supporting siblings of a child with Asperger's syndrome.

As a doctor's child, unless something was wrong physically, my father would call shrinks quacks, so, since the time my son (just 25) was born, he was ostracized for having too much energy or being compulsive about any particular subject which interested him. It has only been this past year that I believe 100% that he suffers to some degree! This manual I will share with his sister in the hopes she can move past her anger and open up to this idea. There is a lot of information contained inside with resources. I intend to start a new chapter in life trying to become an advocate for those living in State funded Assisted Living facilities. I don't know where or how to start, but this I must do! These people need advocates!! My son is fortunate to have me involved in his life so when he calls me at 5:41 to tell me he had no dinner because there wasn't any food left? Yet when I called and raised hell, somewhere a dinner was available? Well, I'm off on a tangent now. Furiously off tangent enough for me to learn how to become an advocate,

It is a pretty good read. I should not have jumped the gun and purchased by title alone however. I assumed it was about how to help siblings learn and show support. If I had read I would have known it is not. Still a pretty decent book. Did not really keep me engaged even after I knew what it was about. I figured it would still be beneficial, it just was a little to 'personal to the author' for me. Still not bad.
