The Autistic Boy in the Unruly Body: Autism and I Series Paperback – July 27, 2022

Purchase options and add-ons

Imagine being born with a body that disobeys you. You cannot sit still. Your mouth cannot form the words necessary to communicate. Your body does the opposite of what your brain is commanding it to do. You cannot escape. This is the real-life, unnerving battle many Autistics who struggle with apraxia, a mind-body disconnect, endure every day.

The Autistic Boy in the Unruly Body takes you on one child’s crusade to discard his own body in search of a better one. His pilgrimage teaches him persistence and self-acceptance, and he learns to see the good in his beautiful, autistic body.

The author, Gregory C Tino, knows this journey all too well. He has spent the last 27 years finding a way to work with, instead of against, his unruly body. We all know a person or family affected by autism who may need to recognize their own beauty. Gregory C Tino wrote this book for them.

Review

The Autistic Boy in the Unruly Body is a picture book that is written for both adults who read books out loud to their children and for children who have begun their journey as readers. It has a softly unfolding and highly imaginative storyline to captivate young readers. While it transports them, it leaves them with certainty of another child's experience. For adults reading this wonderful book, it has a punchy subtext. It took me through an Autistic person's journey in a way that felt visceral and brought home to me what it feels like to live in, learn and accept an unruly body. Gregory Tino tells stories in profoundly moving ways. Do not miss this one.

A wonderful, light-hearted book about a boy who wants to be someone else but comes to find that the best version of himself is - quite literally - himself! This is a great introduction for children into the autistic world, and the Inside Voice team is so proud of what Gregory has accomplished since he found his voice all those years ago!

"A beautiful story exemplifying the hard road traveled by people with autism to unleash their minds and share their love with others. Gregory Tino is an inspiration to people impacted by autism."

I am forever looking for authentic Autistic representation to read to my daughter, so I was thrilled to learn Gregory Tino was starting a series called "Autism and I". The premier book "The Autistic Boy in the Unruly Body" is a fun read from cover to cover as the protagonist looks for a new body that isn't apraxic. As expected, my daughter loves it! I'm happy that she has a book that teaches her to love the skin she's in and to work with her sensory differences to live her best life. I'm already excited for the next book!

I am a 30 year old non-speaking autistic who was able to find my voice in 2017 using the Spelling To Communicate method. At that time I was viewed as having the intellect of a toddler, but I proved them wrong on that dreary May day. Now my goal is to help others to be able to find their own voice and live a better life. I enjoy writing children's books and have written a series of them in my Autism and I Series. I also enjoy writing on my blog "The Autistic Mind Finally Speaks". Proceeds from my book sales are being donated to Inside Voice, the Philadelphia area nonprofit where I learned the Spelling to Communicate method.
