I attended Autodesk University and decided to attempt the certification test. Took the test and did not pass, needed 10 points. went to the study area and borrowed the official training guide, Revit Architecture Essentials.

First, the book is so poorly written. Exercises are not complete, topics not explained, etc. (I was not doing the exercises in the computer, so I don;t know if the datasets were included or not. IO struggled thru the material. Took the test again, and did worse.

I own Intro Revit Architecture, but did not bring it. So I purchased a copy in the Expo Hall. Studied the areas I needed help with and I passed with a 95%. Took the Professional test and passed after second try. Thought I would need to purchase the Mastering Revit book, but the Intro book worked. If you are looking for a good book to learn Revit or take the Certification test, DO NOT buy Revit Architecture Essentials, you will be throwing your money way. I don't own the Mastering book, but noticed it was written by the same authors of the Essentials book. Won't be buying the Essentials book.

If you need help with learning Revit, get the Introducing Revit Architecture 2012 book. Those authors respond to emails if you have questions and the information presented in the book is correct.

This is a very sloppy book. All the criticisms by other reviewers are true. I would be happy to provide a dossier of all the faults, inconsistancies and idiocies to the authors - for a fee. It would take too long to do it as a courtesy. It must be a nice side project to earn a few extra bucks but I wonder how Autodesk could put this pile on their list of Official 'Training' Guides.

I got this book as part of a training workshop with our local Autodesk reseller. We followed some of the exercises in the book but not all so after the class I decided go through the book on my own. Note, if you just read the book you will not catch the mistakes. The book is filled with errors which made following the exercises extremely frustrating; i.e. author incorrectly described steps or did not accurately describe where to find menu/ commands. I found that some of the exercises did not make sense or were so poorly written that they were impossible to follow. Other exercises where had no description at all. I felt like I wasted to much time getting stuck on exercises that did not make sense.

If you are looking for a basic introduction to REVIT, stop here. This is well written, easy to understand, and it is good introduction to REVIT; it covers all of the items generally introduced in a REVIT level one class. It doesn't get into nitty gritty details, and is a QUICK read.

for a book labeled as Official Training, this book is a bit misleading in that regard. This book kept me lost in most chapters specially in ramps and stairs.
The authors do not take you by the hand, and guide you step by step, in order to produce a project. Something you can feel good about it at the end.
Instead they give you files, that are not completely related as a project, with the intent to show what revit can do in architecture. also there are no video clips to reinforce and expand on the training lessons. This book is a waste of time. Spend your money in something that you can actually self-teach and produce a project at the end.

Revit Architecture 2012 Essentials has helped me quickly understand differences with previous versions of Revit, such as Worksharing and Worksets. The tutorials are an excellent introduction to useful issues in everyday design that simplifies the complexity of the program. For instance, I could not believe how simply stair and railing families were illustrated, instructed, and improved over previous versions.

It helps that through the course of the tutorials the book links to important issues in the Revit certification process. Whether you're studying for Revit certification or looking to learn the essentials of quality BIM, this book and its downloadable tutorials will get you there. Incidentally, Sybex has undone the links, they are now at: [...]

Using best practices and definitions found near the end of each chapter will be a helpful resource as the reader moves forward with their BIM team and encounters new issues.

The understanding of BIM workflow would be very useful for principals, consultants, project managers, clients, and building operators in understanding the integrated project delivery method (IPD). Also, the authors, occasionally, give `ways-of-thinking' helping those from a cad-based work world, which is useful for readers relating to the material.
