I've got this and a more advanced book, both part of the official Autodesk training. There are some topics which were not covered in either book. I wish there was a comprehensive training that was somehow structured differently, but I haven't given a lot of thought to how it should be structured.

At any rate, these books allowed me to complete some projects in Revit LT. Any difficulty I had I would blame on the program, not the books. Of course you will probably buy the current book, but since the program is slow to evolve, you might grab this to save $$$.

Our firm is slowly making the transition from autocad to revit. This book, as described, takes an actual project and takes you step by step through the process of drawing and teaching the basics. I'm around 65% through the book and feel I'm grasping the concepts of revit. The book does a good job laying the foundation for using revit on your own. I think the toughest thing about learning revit is letting go of the autocad mindset. The author of the book relates that in his instruction for he was a former autocad user.

This review applies to the release 13 book as well. A coworker and myself are learning with each.

Bought this thinking it would help me get started on learning Revit... It did, for an hour. Then I got tired of reading this and gave up. Found online videos for free that made it a lot easier to follow. And nothing beats real world experience. I learned and picked up Revit much quicker while working in a firm then I ever could have in school or from a book. My advise, just dive in and watch getting started videos on YouTube.

Great Revit book for beginners

I had 10 years experience with CAD, but 0 experience with REVIT. I'm only halfway through the book, but so far this has turned out to be an excellent resource and training guide. The book teaches you proper modeling techniques and the use of many tools by taking you through the creation of a 5 story office building/complex. You should be able to take the knowledge learned from the books example project and apply it to typical real-world projects.
The only thing lacking from this book are more trouble-shooting tips for REVIT errors when a command or tool doesn't quite work as intended. For example, a variety of errors can pop up when trying to trim or attach a wall to the underside of a complex roof joint. So that can be a little frustrating. Overall a good book for a beginner though.

This is a very easy book to read and to learn from. You don't need to be a Revit genius to understand the concepts or the writing. The author takes you through step by step as you would build a model in Revit. However, this is a beginner's book, and there are a lot of features that Revit has that is not covered. If you know the basics, then this will be more of a review than a learning tool. But if you are a total noob, then this is the book to get you started.

Without ever using Revit before, this book lead me through all of the tools with clear and simple descriptions. It very effectively uses a tutorial to draw a six-storey building throughout the book in order to guide you through all that Revit has to offer. This made the book appear to be a lot more relevant in comparison to others, since it is quite evident that the writer has practical real-world experience and knowledge of the program.
Overall I am extremely satisfied with this purchase although I would say that there are a few points in the book where the step by step instructions seem to 'jump' a little. As you might be completing one step, which has been given a significant amount of detail, the next step might be written in a manner which assumes you know what you are doing. (Even though the particular item was not covered in the book yet) This did not happen too often throughout the book, however there were a handful of times where I had to re-read a specific section in order to try and understand what the author was asking me to do.
I found this to be a small shortfall, and would still recommend this book to anyone with no experience using Revit.
