Anyone who has done the autoimmune protocol for eating knows that it is challenging. There are a ton of good books on "regular" "paleo" eating, but they often include things, like nightshades, eggs or nuts.

This is a very easy to read and use cookbook that gives good recipes without those ingredients. I know it'll have a place on my self for a very long time!

I recently received my colour version of Autoimmune Disease - The Clean Eating Cookbook. I was immediately impressed with the clarity of each recipe, with a full-page recipe (in a large enough font for my failing eyesight!) and an adjacent colour photo of the recipe. LOVE IT! I won't buy recipe books without pictures. So far I've tried the Lettuce Wraps & Kale Chips - delicious and I could eat all I wanted without worrying about calories. Oh, and the Pancake Perfection...OMG, awesome. Although I don't have severe autoimmune issues, I'm a strong believer in clean eating and this book offers that style of eating. Wonderful gift idea for that special friend too!

Thank you Lisa for taking the time and effort to produce this book!

Some "alternative" cookbook authors have a genius about them--they know how to combine ingredients in novel ways to get the tastes and textures they desire. Ani Phyo comes to mind. Lisa Marchese's recipes are nothing like Ani's, but she has a similar genius. Who would have thought of a riceless sushi or a grain-free granola, and done a good job with them?

I waited a while after purchasing this book to review it, because I wanted to make sure what I thought about it. It's not 100% perfect from my point of view--some recipes call for maple syrup, for instance, which isn't on my autoimmune diet list, and things tend to have to bake longer than the recipes say in my usually accurate oven. But I gave it a 5-star rating because so many of the recipes are fantastic and lifesavers for a foodie like me who finds herself at least temporarily restricted from nightshades, seeds including mustard, nutmeg, and cumin, and all sweeteners.

The recipe for black cherry ice cream alone is worth the cost of the book. I've made it regularly since I first tried it, and omg, it is awesome. Non-paleo/autoimmune diet people like it too! Other favorites: the sweet potato chips (I omit the maple syrup and they're just fine), the olive dip, the various cookies and crackers, and the scrumptious bursting berry pie--I swear I'll make that for my birthday this year instead of a forbidden cake.

There are a few places where you should tread cautiously and use common sense. Apparently my heads of cauliflower are giant compared to Lisa's, because the cauliflower crust pizza crust came out huge and took forever to bake. Those wonderful sweet potato chips don't necessarily have to be sauteed after they're baked--I just bake 'em dry and toss 'em with oil, salt, and cinnamon.

I gave the author three stars just for empathy. I know exactly what's alike to have Hashimoto and to go through all of that and then some for several years. Although, I also know what's alike to recover from it, to heal and the struggle behind trying to stay healthy through the proper nutrition.
Her book does not do a thing for me, each recipe on the book would have to be adjusted and tailored for me.
One size does not fit all. I was expecting more, I guess.
Instead I found helpful and inspiring The Primal Blueprint Cookbook by Mark Sisson.
I hope this helped.

I loved Lisa's encouragement on her Facebook page, and I was thrilled to know she would be offering a cookbook full of ideas to baby step me through this process! There are so many great ideas in her cookbook, you won't be disappointed! Having to going AIP is as barebones as you can get, and this made me feel like I had actually DID have some options. I love her granola! Super-yum! Thanks Lisa for sharing through your struggles!

Most of the recipes are very good and very easy to make. I did have trouble with the pancakes. Wish there where a few more breakfast suggestions, but other than that I use it every day.
