Wanted a back-up audible alarm for my Jaguar XKR - this device is self-powered, needs NO wiring, and is innocuous (wife thought it was a 'tracer'!). Used light energy to power an audio oscillator and amplifier, top generate a "Beep!" Beep!" "Beep!" sound as long as the backup light is on. Mount with double-face tape over the revwerse lamp lend, on the outside - not app[arentluy affected by car wash, curved mountuing surface, or (so far) bright sunlight. A cheap and easy solution to my defined problem.

At first it works while you back up. But there are issues:

1. If the Sun is shining behind your car's back, the back-up light will reflect the light into the alarm and it will beep forever.

2. It runs on battery so it runs out of juice quickly.

I would go with a special light bulb which has an alarm built-in. Amazon has one but I don't know if it fits my car or not.

I had one of these for a couple of years or so, and it was great. When the battery goes, you can't replace the battery so, when that happened, I purchased more units. I decided to put one on each backup light, instead of using just one as I had in the past. Because the alarms aren't synchronized, the sounds are great attention-getters, which is the purpose. The only drawback that I can think of is that the alarms will sound if you park your vehicle where the sun hits the units--which could drain their batteries much quicker than would be desirable. A neighbor came to my door recently to tell me there was an alarm going off at my car and he thought there might be something wrong. I moved the car so the back lights were in the shade and the problem was solved. I would definitely buy these again.

Update 9-9-13 -- I was a little over-enthusiastic about this product. In practice it really is not loud enough to be any use. At first I was dazzled by a clever idea, but in fact it's hard to hear if it's working from the driver's seat. It needs to be about five times louder to get people's attention.
PROS: Affordable, easy to use on my 1993 Mitsubishi Expo LRV, where the backup lights are set low down. When I tested it from both sides before attaching, the sun did not set it off from the side that faces out, so I don't see where that concern came from, unless in some vehicles the lights are set high enough to get a reflection. When I put my car in reverse, lo and behold, the beeper works!
CONS: First and foremost, the adhesive is stronger than Gorilla tape, so be sure to test the positioning with removable tape until you get it right. I thought I had cracked the cover of my backup light trying to pry it off the first time, but it was only scratched. If you do make the same mistake I did before reading this review, you can get very strong two-sided tape at Ace Hardware (or online). Second, I cannot hear the beep from inside the car with the door closed, but people near the beep might pause and wonder what it was (a monster mosquito from outer space?). In a quiet driveway, a child with 20/20 hearing could probably hear the beep well enough to look toward it. However, If there is noise nearby I doubt it would be heard at all, so it needs a much louder beep. Overall, I loved the choice of not having to get an expensive hard-wired unit, which I would not do, so four stars is for the clever idea in anticipation of an improved model. I'm sure more can be done with this light-activated technology, and I've ordered a second one for backup (pardon the pun) and to see what other uses I can find for it.

Mount using double stick foam tape (without covering light sensor hole on back) suggested by others. Too late for me, I applied as received in package. Others found Goo Gone a solution to the adhesive making it difficult to remove when the battery dies. If that works for me when the time comes, I would buy this again. Be sure to mount product directly over the light bulb of your back up light. Mine too sounded continually when my car was parked in the sun. If you were willing to attach this to your backup light, you probably won't mind placing a small piece of black electrical tape on either side as well as above and below the back up alarm. Kind of looks like a little plus sign and I don't mind the appearance. That solved the sun problem.

I'd rather use one of these with the beeper integrated into the bulb but my cousin has a Toyota Yaris and it uses non standard backup bulbs. This is more for a novelty than any real safety as I don't think it will last a long time but it does work well. It might last longer if you could somehow get it inside the backup lense but I'm not sure how that will affect the volume of the sound.

Instructions said to shine flashlight on device to test alarm. When didn't work,I gave low marks. I called seller. They said, do not test with LED light. I tested with regular light and works great. I now have it on my car and it beeps whenever I put into reverse. Of course doesn't replace looking all around and backing slowly, but alerts pedestrians etc of my presence and movement intentions.

I ordered two of these, and the condition of the packaging clearly suggests old stock - scratched, slightly dusty, etc. This causes some concern about how long the batteries might last, if they're already several years old inside the package; time will tell. They do work, though, so I'm satisfied.

The packaging allows you to test the beeper by shining a light on the photocell on the back of the beeper. I do not understand why, but based on my own experience and confirmed by the seller, an LED flashlight will not activate the beeper. A standard, non-LED flashlight works fine; so does holding the back of the package up to a regular light bulb.

Update: the non-replaceable battery lasted a few months at most. Disappointed.
