I have a 150 gallon tank, so when I use this, it's submerged. I wrapped the battery door with silicone tape, as recommended by another reviewer. So far, I haven't had an issue with water getting into the battery compartment.
This worked wonderfully for vacuuming the gravel in my tank. It was enough suction to suck the dirt up into the filter compartment. I would agitate the gravel a little, and the dirt would separate easily. Some tiny particles did make it through the filter and made the water cloudy, but the tank filter took care of pretty quickly. Cleaning out the filter was very easy. I just shook out the bulk of the debris, and rinsed it in the sink.
I do wish this type of gravel cleaner came with a squeeze bulb, instead of batteries. I had one , years ago, that used a bag type filter and squeeze bulb for suction, and really liked the simplicity. Unfortunately I've been unable to find that type.
So far, I'm very happy with this gravel cleaner. If it breaks down prematurely or develops issues I will update my review.
Thought I would give this battery unit a try. At first I was anxious that it wasn't more powerful and the gravel didn't move about more. After a weeks use I am very pleased with it. An amazing amount of detritus is captured by the filter and when I stir the gravel with my hand to test it it is remarkably cleaner.
Yes. it does fog the water a bit. By the next morning it is clear as a bell again.
I am quite pleased. If that changes I will update this review.
-Like how tf was i supposed to use a cheap siphon tube to clean up poop everyday from my Red Devil Cichlid without taking out water. Water changes everyday? NO THANKS.
-Honestly, overpriced as hell but beats PetSmart pricing in-store near me, and sturdy lasted me three months so far..
-Jams on me sometimes but i just de-assemble it and unclog it and works fine again (Usually my fault because i pick up too much sand in the intake tube when i'm rearranging the sand in my tank using it)
-Uses 4 batteries though but batteries are cheap. (AA batteries)
1st the package I got the batteries looked like they had somehow gotten wet and there was dried battery acid everywhere. Also the front of it was scuffed noticeably. I would be able to overlook those things if the product actually worked. It didn't suck up anything. I tried and tried and it didn't work. I took it over to my 75 gallon tank to see if it would lift up waste on the bottom as it is sand. Still didn't work. Also the motor seems to go up and down as far as power and suction ability. I don't know if maybe I just got a bad one, but combined with the poor packing, I decided to send it back. I was disappointed as I was looking for a way to spot clean my small tank without hooking up the vacuum to the faucet and doing a whole change, but I guess that's the only way.
