Editorial Reviews

"Mele's presentation is philosophically rigorous yet accessible to the non-philosopher. The author demonstrates an impressive grasp of historical and contemporary aspects of the freewill debate and builds upon his earlier work."--Choice

"Mele is a clear and careful writer. His book challenges the reader to reflect seriously on the meaning of self-control and autonomy....Mele has hit his mark in this well-argued, engaging, and thought-provoking book."--The Review of Metaphysics

"...this is a great book. It is rich in arguments, replete with useful examples, and informed by the literature in philosophy and psychology. It is not always easy going, but one's efforts are rewarded. I highly recommend it."--Ethics

From the Back Cover

This book addresses the related topics of self-control and individual autonomy. "Self-control" is defined as the opposite of akrasia - weakness of will. The study of self-control seeks first to understand the concept on its own terms, and its bearing on one's actions, beliefs, emotions, and personal values. It goes on to consider how a proper understanding of self-control and its manifestations can shed light on personal autonomy and autonomous behavior. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Alred R Mele Autonomous Agents: From Self-Control to Autonomy is a great book on helping people to learn about choices. I am still reading it. Some might find it deep reading but I found it insightful and helpful for what I was looking for to change my life with lack of self-discipline. Whether you are too discipline or not disciplined enough I still would recommend this book.
