About the Author

William Davidow was Intel's senior vice president of marketing and sales, where he is credited with inventing modern high-tech marketing. He cofounded the venture capital firm Mohr Davidow in 1985. He is the author of three books and the coauthor of two, including The Virtual Corporation, which sold more than 100,000 copies.

Michael S. Malone covered the technology beat for the San Jose Mercury News in the 1980s and remains one of world's best-known technology-business journalists. He is the author or coauthor of nearly thirty books, including The Virtual Corporation with William Davidow. He is currently dean's executive professor at Santa Clara University.

This deeply insightful book written with more than just the data scientist in mind will help to shed the light of awareness on what is taking place right now in our society's social phase change (to use the term in the book). It may even help to change the paths our technology is headed down, maybe not by much, but by some bit. To me, the Autonomous Revolution is something that I feel suddenly aware of after having read the book, yet at the same time I realize that I always knew it was happening. I have turned an intentionally blind eye to this rather than admit what is happening.
The more our lives are made easier by autonomous means, the easier it is to accept the changes that are happening and to not view them with any sense of caution. Yet, caution is the one thing we should have in abundance. Davidow and Malone are letting us know of the huge implications of letting technology take over our lives and they are imploring us not to be so hasty in our actions. Right now we seem to be on a runaway autonomous train and we're all holding on for dear life. Something might be able to be done to help, and the authors do give us a glimmer of hope for a different outcome of the future. We just need to find a way to alter the status we have so readily given technology and curb its appetite long enough to figure out a better course. The Autonomous Revolution is presenting us with the tools to do just that.

I thought that UBI was a move by communists to take over the younger generations and kill their spirit. However, reading this book has set me straight and now I am all for it! Now, it only makes sense to establish a UBI. I paid $15 for the Kindle version of this book, and I never, ever pay that much for a book, especially an electronic one. On top of the price, this one is only around 200 pages long! The viewpoints in this book make it so worth the cost! These two authors present their evidence in such a way that anyone can look around themselves and see the truth of it. There just is not much to argue about regarding their observations. They then offer solutions that make sense. The solutions are unusual and if, like me before this, you have not listened to the perspective of the other side, you may automatically reject these ideas as being impossible or impractical. The authors show how it is, indeed, both possible and necessary to anticipate the future that is directly in front of us, by instituting these very forward-thinking changes. I recommend that everybody get ahold of this book somehow and read it.

Too academic and not enough future-oriented explanations

While I found the subject and the headline to be fascinating, the book was too academic and a bit thin on some future projections that would support the authors’ positions. Moreover, it was redundant in many places, with prior chapters in this book, and with other futurist authors who also cover this subject (Kurzweil, Diamondis, Harari, Martin Ford, Brynjolfsson, Kotler, Tony Seba, et al) and its ramifications. I also thought the authors did a mediocre job describing what the future would look like in terms of economics, wealth distribution, sharing, et al. . .and the institutions that might support an abundant planet. For instance, there was almost NO discussion of climate change and the likely scenarios around renewable energy (including battery) breakthroughs, which are discussed by some of the authors (esp Seba and Diamondis, above.

"The Autonomous Revolution" by Davidow and Malone is an important guide to plan for the future. The authors discuss the demise of the good job, the growing lack of privacy, the need for cybersecurity, new phase changes in technology and the adjustments needed to experience the benefits of the autonomous revolution rather than the inevitable negations associated with mind altering changes.

Society has evolved from agriculture/farming to the age of machines to automation to the information age and now to artificial intelligence,the internet of things, supercomputers and humanoids.The authors describe the next move forward to be "the autonomous revolution".

The future won't be just life on earth but also life on the moon,mars and other planets. The exploration of new worlds will expand our infrastructure building exponentially. New elements will be discovered and the existing supply of rare elements on earth will be expanded.

The authors discuss virtual reality, simulated processes and virtual deposit boxes at length. Virtual reality and 3D printing will allow medical students the opportunity to learn medicine in 3D over having to dissect animals and plants in a lab.Robotic surgery is already revolutionizing the highly complex area of heart and brain surgery, Soon enough, 3D printing will facilitate transplantation, as well as,the manufacture of component parts on demand.

The book discusses the notion of Zero Economic Value people and the blurring of the definition of productivity. This notion has a mixed applicability.The demand for human labor will grow in the area of infrastructure projects on earth and ultimately in space environments.

Human labor is needed in the blue collar trades, municipalities and the professions {Actuarial,Medicine,Law,IT, Accounting,Sports,Engineering,Teaching,Consulting,Physical Therapy ...}. The demand for personal services is still considerable for grooming, massages, bartenders, culinary arts, movers, product assembly, personal trainers and much more.

Despite all of the mechanization,schools still need teachers,administrators,tutors,security and a plethora of other services.Students don't learn exclusively from the machines.Too much mechanization leaves people lonely or without people skills.Machines still assist humanity rather than replace the need for a plurality of humans.

The authors warn us about the challenges of mechanization; however, the biggest threat to humanity is from nature itself.It's not just global warming. In the US alone, the earthquake zones pose cataclysmic earth shifts from the San Andreas fault to the San Madrid fault and the Cascadian fault.

Unemployment and underemployment will be with us in the future.The grand army of unemployed workers is a concept popularized by the Karl Marx/Engels discussions on political economy. These negations refer to the surplus army of labor in a capitalist society.

Historically, retraining has been the human resources mechanism for dealing with involuntary unemployment and the demise of a good job.Beyond retraining, the Israelis have popularized "The Kibbutz"; wherein, people could be taken off the streets literally and housed with meals and a job included.Historically, the Kibbutz employed people in farming.The inner cities have begun a rudimentary model of this idea with "roof farming" in New York and other places.

During the time of Lincoln, The Homestead Act (1862) provided that any prospective citizen, who did not bear arms against the U.S., could claim 160 acres of government land.Settlers were required to “improve” the land by building a house or cultivating the acreage.With a little seed money, a similar effort could be encouraged today in order to deal forthrightly with involuntary unemployment in the US.

Not everyone has a need for a good job for an entire working career. In parts of Europe,families have owned the same house for generations.In addition, people throughout the world have built generational wealth with solid portfolios of stocks and other investments.i.e. "Forever Stocks"

The authors discuss disruption at length. Examples of disruptive products and services include emails over sending letters. Another example is the driverless car over an auto driven by a person. Home medical devices like the DIGITAL TENS UNITS provide electrically driven pulses to assist in managing high tension in muscles.Robotic surgery provides advanced surgical intervention with high precision,as well as, a facilitated access over more painful/invasive surgical procedures.

Overall, "The Autonomous Revolution" by Davidow and Malone is a fresh perspective on what the present and future will bring to America and the world.This book will help with government and corporate planning, human resource management, engineering, economics, finance and other areas. There is an extensive set of research notes at the end of the book.<pp.197-225>

I've read my fair share of books about AI, Quantum Conputering and Technology (in general) - but this book has to be one of the most engaging and insightful books that I have read in a long time. The ability to write about all variety of topics in technology such as Digital Privacy, Job loss from AI, and Living in a Virtual world, in such an welcoming way is hard to come by (imo). Both authors incorporate their predictions and solutions to a host of Tech issues through storytelling and heavily sourced lititature. If you are passionate about any of these topics, regardless of whether your are a technically versed person, this book will change the way you view technology.
