About the Author

Donte is a 21-year-old queer, black poet. Named the first Youth Poet Laureate of Saint Paul, Minnesota, they are the author of Autopsy (Button Poetry) and winner of the 2016 Most Promising Young Poet Award from the Academy of American Poets. They are an alum of TruArtSpeaks, as well as a current board member of Black Table Arts. Donte resides in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where they hibernate during the winter and seriously consider purchasing a warmer yet less fashionable jacket.

Several years in a Cave Canem writing workshop, a dear friend and terrific writer Ruth Ellen Kocher says something to that fact that a poet can use page to manipulate breath. Apart from a story I read from Awaekae Emezi a few weeks ago, Autopsy was probably the heaviest thing I have ever read. I understand and recognize Donte's story. He tells it incredibly well. I bawled. I rested it for days, went back in. This book summoned all the water out of me. I loved it.
