In this chatty autobiography, Gardner, who died last January at age 67, tells of her upbringing in a poor but proud Southern family, her sudden success in early-'40s Hollywood--mainly because of her beauty--and rails against MGM, which played up her cheesecake potential. She neatly sums up the problems in each of her three short marriages: Mickey Rooney was a blatant womanizer; Artie Shaw was cool and overbearing; Frank Sinatra (the two were the loves of each other's lives) was as jealous as she, leading to drunken marathon fights. Gardner also sketches a creepy portrait of Howard Hughes, who for years stopped at no machination in an unsuccessful attempt to bed and marry her. A shy woman who used drink to feel comfortable socially, Gardner seems very likable, down-home, spontaneous and sadly derogatory toward her intelligence, acting abilities--and even her beauty. Of the seven included "eulogies" from friends and colleagues, Stephen Birmingham's best captures the joy and tragedy of Gardner's life. Photos not seen by PW .

I rarely read books of this nature, but having seen several of Ava's movies, I wanted to know more about her. What an amazing woman! I don't think I've ever laughed so much in my life while reading a book. She certainly had a wicked sense of humor, and enough attitude for ten people. In a word, she was absolutely adorable. Smart, funny, sincere, and yes, blunt, mouthy, and passionate beyond measure. I am left, now more than ever, wishing I could have known her. This book, of course, also recounts her three failed marriages and her search for what we all want out of life; happiness. Because of her stunning beauty (and she was absolutely GORGEOUS), she became swept up into a Hollywood that never really appreciated her talents and abilities. (Take a listen to HER singing "That Man of Mine" in the original soundtrack to Showboat. Why in the world did they dub over that beautiful voice???) This book really helps one to truly get to know the real Miss G. I must also admit,
it greatly lowered my appreciation of George C. Scott. He was a great actor, but what he did to Ava is inexcusable!!

There is a really nice and complete filmography at the end. I must also say that the copy I received was in near perfect condition. Love it.

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Ava Gardner through her memoir. She was earthy, outspoken, and impulsive, with an unstoppable zest for life. Her marriages to Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, and Frank Sinatra are described in detail as are her affairs with many well-known men. Although she constantly claims to be very shy, she managed to rise to the top of her profession and live life on her own terms.

The book is based on a series of interviews, so it's chatty, humorous, and full of energy, She often refers to the reader as, "honey," and seems to truly enjoy talking about her wild life.

There are many good black and white photos and also some chapters about her written by famous friends. It is sad that she died only months after the book was written.

Highly recommended.

Miss Gardner was a very unique being: Unabashedly beautiful, tempestuous, talented and deeply misunderstood. Her authentic voice comes through so clearly here. Real talk: This is probably one of the most un-actressy books around, written by an entertainer.

There is no pretense, no prettying-up the truth to make the subject more appealing. Miss Ava was The beautiful. Unvarnished truth! She appears very real, flawed, yes, but ultimately lovable. It's easy to see while some of the most celebrated men of her time fell head over heels in love/lust with her. Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw, Howard Hughes, Frank Sinatra, George C. Scott, to name but a few.

Some of those men don't come off as great as their public persona's would have us believe. But this is Miss Gardner's story, straight, no chaser.

Ava Gardner, was also a spirited woman, not above raising a little hell, drinking too much, or getting physical whenever she felt the need. She didn't see herself as special (no false modesty here, she always knew she was "pretty") and she didn't think of herself as particularly gifted. She probably would have been happier had she never gone to Hollywood, but remained the lovely southern belle, who raised a loving family and lived un-extraordinary life. But then, the world would have never known her splendor.

She gave us such a radiant and radiating screen presence, and for this we are glad.

Apparently, she lived one hell of an interesting real life as well.

Ava is my favorite screen legend of her era, most notably because, like her ex-husband used to sing, she did it her way, with no apologies. She was gorgeous. She was quick-witted and a hellion to boot, who loved and lived fiercely and I love to hear about it, all in her own words. She was larger than life and so is her auto-biography.

I bought the book used, but it was very reasonably priced and arrived in beautiful condition much sooner than expected. Thank you!

Ava really told it like it was and took responsibility for all her bad behavior. The most interesting statement, though, was the one where she says that she's not an alcoholic, she just drank for the effect, to help her overcome her shyness and boost her courage. Hmmmm...the last time I looked, that's pretty much partly the definition of an alcoholic. Not to mention that all the really bad things happened to her were the result of either her, others, or both being drunk.

But all in all, I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it for any fan of "Old Hollywood."

If you love Ava Gardner, this book is a really great read although I was a bit shocked the book came in large print but I read it anyway. Really good read.

I suggest also reading Ava's housekeeper/friend Mearene Jordan's book about her life with Ava as well.
