But moving on to Ava...
This is Ms. Pokras' first attempt at a full-blown romance novel. Chasing Invisible dealt with that subject a bit, but it wasn't the focus. Romance, however, is what Ava's Wishes is all about, and I think she did a really good job with it. I read the second edition, so the issues in another review are no longer...well...no longer an issue.
Photo artist Thomas Malloy has his sights set on Ava Haines, an art major in her final year of college. While he is dashing, handsome, has a sexy accent, and impresses her with his 'older man' sophistication, Ava can't ignore her growing attraction for one-time nude class model, Max Wallis.
It's fun to see how Ava deals with the dilemma of suddenly having two men in her life, along with her determination to not fail statistics class for a third time. Along the way we get to meet her friend Carly, who can be a little clueless, and a little over the top sometimes, but basically, she's a sweetie that I enjoyed getting to know, too.
The plot twist mentioned by another reviewer was surprising, but dealt with in a realistic way, and while I was sorry to see a character I'd grown to like turn out to be not so likeable, it was a good addition to the story. I'd like to say more, but that would include spoilers, so I'll just add that if you want something to read while you're sunning yourself at the beach, or just to relax with as you enjoy the warm days of summer, Ava's Wishes is a good choice.
***I received an advance reading copy of Ava's Wishes in return for my honest review.***
Ava's Wishes is an excellent first book in a new series, Whispered Wishes. Karen Pokras, who has also published middle-grade books as Karen Pokras Toz, seems to be a natural at chick-lit. I was very impressed with how Ms. Pokras provided enough of a glimpse at Ava's two sisters to make readers already interested in reading their stories while still keeping the focus of this book on Ava.
If you enjoy sweet chick-lit stories with clean romance then this book is a good choice, and I would definitely recommend it.
(Copy was provided, but I was not required to write a review.)
I was introduced to Karen's work by a friend who recommended Pie and Other Brillant Ideas, I loved that book and was excited to read her new series. When I read the first version I was a little shocked because it didn't seem like the same author had written both books. I was delighted to read this new version, Karen put a lot of work into editing the original story and for me it was well worth it. I was able to connect with the characters and wanted to know what was going to happen to them.
Ava's wishes is not just your usual love triangle. There is humor and typical college student angst. I was swept along with Ava as she tried to follow her heart, or at least understand what it was trying to say to her. I felt her fear when she got into a very bad situation and cheered for her when she finally found true love.
This is a clean story, although Ava and her man do have a sexual relationship there are no descriptive love scenes, and I didn't miss them.
I recommend this book and can't wait to find out what happens to Holly, and I'm hoping we'll get to catch up a little with Ava as well!
