Gene Luen Yang writes, and sometimes draws, comic books and graphic novels. As the Library of Congress’ fifth National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, he advocates for the importance of reading, especially reading diversely. American Born Chinese, his first graphic novel from First Second Books, was a National Book Award finalist, as well as the winner of the Printz Award and an Eisner Award. His two-volume graphic novel Boxers & Saints won the L.A. Times Book Prize and was a National Book Award Finalist. His other works include Secret Coders (with Mike Holmes), The Shadow Hero (with Sonny Liew), Superman from DC Comics (with various artists), and the Avatar: The Last Airbender series from Dark Horse Comics (with Gurihiru). In 2016, he was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow. His most recent books are Dragon Hoops from First Second Books and Superman Smashes the Klan from DC Comics.

She's in for a major surprise here (which shall remain nameless so as not to spoil anything). But read it, and you'll enjoy it, especially if you're a Toph nut.

So we're now in one of those silent times between seasons of the Legend of Korra and I need my Avatar fix!

Good thing The Rift Part One came out.

Let me start by saying, no Zuko is not in this one. The cover doesn't include him and the first dialogue is pretty much saying that he is not going to make an appearance. Even though I'm a major Zuko fan, I understand considering The Search focused on him and his relationships. But, that doesn't mean it can't still be an excellent story!

A lot of this story seems to focus on the fact that Toph and Aang are foils to each other. Since Toph is generally more vocal, Aang is accompanied by three air acolytes so he can throw passive aggressive jabs at her and say he's teaching his students... this in unlike Toph who outright calls Aang's ideas foolish. Depending on how and where you were raised, you can feel either side is more right. However, both of them have solid reasons as to why they feel the way they do.

The conflict and tension between these two characters continues to rise throughout the story. I almost feel it's a conflict that was bound to happen. Even in flash backs with Toph and Aang during the Legend of Korra you can see that even though they are really close friends, their completely different demeanor causes some tension and fights.

Sokka is funny as always and the mild, loving sibling banter between him and Katara is always amusing and relateable to anyone with a sibling.

As we've come used to with the Avatar Comics, it ends in a twist. You do kinda see it coming with the stories set-up, but it ended at a perfect scene that makes you hungry for more!

The only complaint that I have is that I feel that Katara is a little out of character. She is usually extremely protective over Aang and tends to act as his more aggressive voice. We already know that her and Toph have had conflict in the best so I'm not sure why she just took such a backseat in this book. The reasonable answer, I assume, is she is two or three years older by this point and has matured, but she is still pretty young.

Anyway, definitely worth the buy if you've been reading the comics or just a fan of the series. If you are new to the comics, I highly suggest buying The Promise and The Search trilogies first.

So...,this book explores just what happened to Ursa,Lord Suko's Mother.
Obviously we don't know what to think because we know so little about her and her past.
Is Ursa an innocent bride taken away from her childhood friend or is she a bit of a witch ?
There is a slight misunderstanding at the beginning of this book where Azula asks Ty Lee
and Suki why they betrayed her and how did 'she' convince them to change sides.
They both reply that they don't know what Azula is talking about.You see,the mystery might have
more than a little to do with Ursa,was she secretive and manipulative ?
Did she live a complicated life...,so far,we just don't know.
But I aim to find out by buying books 2 & 3 in The Search series.
All the Avatar books are great creations filled with brilliant characters and engaging plot lines.
You have to read each book several times to catch all the little extras going on in the background.
I've loved reading comic books and graphic novels all my life and rate Avatar up there with the best.

What is there to really be said about this. If you're a fan of the tv show Avatar the last air bender you'l enjoy this comic. Its a fun story with an interesting art style. You'll get further showings of your favorite characters like Aang and Katara among others. It really fills in that post series ending story. The tv show ends with the fall of the fire nation but we don't realy get to see what happens next. How is the peace kept? What does Aang do? we learn a bit of it during the legend of Korra but there is a lot of story to be told. I can't wait to buy more of these and keep going. It'll keep the withdrawral symptoms of the show ending at bay at the very least. The comics tone is so similar that I can very easily read the different characters in their actual voices. On to the next one

The Promise & The Search was a true continuation of the TV series, since it fleshed out Zuko's/Azula's story arc. The Rift however, feels more like a stand-alone story, with the main focus being on the continued development of Toph and Aang.

More of that classic dialogue and humor we all know and love, and some interesting plot points and twists to keep things going. A must for all fans of the show.

I so badly wanted The Last Airbender to continue but it didn't continue as an anime, so i read the comic, all up to this one so far.
All the comics so far are excellent and this one has shown the most character development for Toph.
Buy "The Search" before this book because that chapter is finished and is best read before this one.
