Fantastic concept, good first execution, but it's not there yet.

I have been following the Glyph for years, ever since its debut on Kickstarter. My objective the entire time was to have a replacement for my television so I could watch my movies, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc anywhere and still feel like I've got my own personal movie theater. Thus far, the Glyph was the best option. Sure, you can use an Oculus Rift, but the promise of the Glyph's technology was way better and should allow for a much more comfortable viewing opportunity.

I didn't care for head tracking or 3D immersion or flying drones or anything fancy. I just wanted an amazing personal theater with good sound.

It is with a heavy heart that I write here that the Glyph is not yet living up that dream. Having read countless reviews on the Glyph, I had heard of some issues, but I was hoping that Avegant would release a second iteration sometime. Sadly, they seem to be focusing on their light field technology instead of the Glyph. Alas, I went ahead and finally decided to buy my Glyph and see if it would live up to my purposes.

The GOOD:
* This thing is beautiful. It looks and feels like the product was made by Apple. Fantastic packaging, quality materials, everything solid.
* When you finally manage to tweak the screen to your liking, it's a gorgeous viewing experience. I would just lay back on my bed and watch House of Cards for hours and it looks like I'm viewing a 50" screen from 7 feet away.
* The audio is fantastic. I'm not an audiophile but I felt immersed while viewing.

The BAD:
* The weight. People had mentioned it's heavy, and yes, it is. You can mitigate this weight by using the head strap or just laying down, but it's a solid product.
* Adjusting the display. Many folks have complained about this and it's true: it takes a while to get the display just right. Even when I found I had arrived at the perfect location, I would still find myself tweaking the focus or eye portals during a show.
* This is not designed for people with massive heads. I have a 72mm interpupillary distance, which is at least 7mm larger than anyone else I know, and even with the portals shifted to the furthest point away from each other, I could never see the full screen in both eyes. I felt like I was regularly fighting to see the whole screen. It was small, but super annoying.
* The left audio channel buzzing/humming sound. This is the reason that I am actually returning my Glyph, because it was defective. I thought perhaps the buzzing was coming because I was charging and watching at the same time, but even when I disconnected both the iPhone and Glyph from charging and was running both on battery, I could still hear this buzzing in the left audio channel. Several other reviews online had talked of this, and while it again is not super obnoxious, it really does destroy the experience, especially if you're watching a scene where there's a serious quiet moment.
* Difficult to find information online. Amazon sells both the Glyph and the Glyph Founder's Edition, but what is the difference? I tweeted Avegant to ask them, but they did not respond and it's been several days. I also tried to create an account on their online forum, but I've been waiting for approval for a week as well.

I think the idea of what Avegant is doing is fantastic, and ideally a perfect world would involve some form of embedded computer with perhaps some remote control or interface to the OS that would allow me to choose Netflix, Hulu, etc rather than just using the Glyph as an extra TV screen. But that would also add more weight, which is something we would definitely want to avoid. I also would advise that Avegant find a way to get that screen to 1080p. It's subtle at this point, but when I would use the Glyph at 720p and then watch the same clip on my iPad 9.7, the difference in quality was obvious.

So that would be my advice to Avegant:
* Make it lighter
* Support 1080p or higher.
* Make it self-contained so I don't _need_ to have an iPhone or iPad or something else to hook it up to. I'm sure some fork of Android would do the job.
* Support people with bigger heads! Perhaps just make the little eye portals bigger?

That's pretty much it. The device is beautiful, the idea is fantastic, and I suspect Avegant will do great things with their light field technology, but the current v1 of the Glyph is just not there yet.

great for glasses users

I wear glasses and didn't like the headsets I tried and had to wear my glasses under. Got the Glyph because I can adjust it to my prescription. Other than the glasses adjustment, the headset is perfect for what I bought it for which is watch movies off of my phone. The headset is a little heavy, especially after prolonged use, but as long as I’m laying down or sitting, it’s okay. Screen looks big and sharp. it’s a good viewing experience.

Best in-flight entertainment system

In my job I fly cross country a lot and decided to spoil myself with the Glyph. It works great at isolating me from the dystopian world that is the main cabin. I am extremely near-sighted and also need reading glasses, but after a few minutes of tuning the adjustments the picture clarity and resolution was similar to my Sony 55” 1080p at home for movies, and almost as good as my notebook for text and games. I’ve tried other micro-displays and HD headsets before, but nothing was this clear and free from distortion.
I watched Saving Private Ryan to test out eye fatigue and give the audio a challenge. The sound quality is excellent and the over-the-ear cups provide great isolation and reasonable comfort. I still had enough battery life for a 2 hour Coheed and Cambria live concert on YouTube. So far, I’ve used it with my iPhone, iPad, and notebook for streaming video with no problems. I occasionally use it at home when the kids have use of the Sony 55”.
Pros:
High resolution screen
Good crisp colors
Good theatrical sound and isolation
Easy to adjust with a very wide range
Trivial to use with anything having an HDMI connector

Cons:
Only for adults (Good range of adjustments, but it’s a bit big for pre-teens)
Futuristic looking, attracts attention (People ask a lot of questions about the headset, so be prepared if you’re using it in public.)

If you’re looking for a mobile theater, I'd recommend a Glyph.

I travel a lot, so I was excited to get the Glyph. I haven’t flown with it yet, but I’ve tested it watching movies and listening to music at home. So far, so good. I get dry eyes watching TV, but no eye soreness with the Glyph which is dope. I’ve worn the headphones a bit with my roommate cooking or making a smoothie. I can hear him, but it’s super muffled. They wrap well around my ears and should sound nice even on a plane.

Want to love it, but has major compatibilty

I bought it after using a friend's. Saw that it was bluetooth capable, but did not look into what that meant. That was my bad. I really wanted to like this product. It really has great image quality and good sound. The main problem is compatibility. They really need to make it more compatible with more products without specialized wires. And that's the crux of it all. It needs to be attached to a wire regardless of the source to view videos. And the wire can vary depending on what product you want to connect it to. So you may need one wire to connect to your phone and a different wire for your tablet and yet another wire for your laptop. It just does not make sense.

It would make more sense view video wirelessly and attach the headset, via a wire, to a battery pack/power bank (I've read that they do not want to be able to connect to video sources wirelessly because there is too much draw on the battery). It would solve all the compatibility issues. It would make it much simpler to connect to a wide variety of video sources.

Make sure you check your compatibility. I even contact Avegant to see if they would be updating it. They responded that they would "continue to support our video headset but will not be making any changes / upgrades to it."
