Where as Dark Knight gave you dark, gritty, realistic Batman.
Avengers gives you light, extraordinary superheroes.
Now, plot... eh, the plot is a little weak and the introduction will turn off any casual viewer. I don't think it was the smartest idea to start with comic book talk of the Tesseract. As a fan of comics myself, I could see this scene setting a bad tone for anyone who doesn't read comics. Also, it's a little bit campy and feels out of place in the movie. Quite honestly, they could have started the film right at the base and gotten rid of these scene altogether.
Also, there are some things that still don't work for me. Though I tried to pay attention, I still don't see why Loki and Hawkeye were in Germany. Loki's plan seemed unnecessarily convoluted to work properly. Now, yes, I know, arch villains are supposed to have supremely convoluted plans. The problem is that when you see it in movie form, it starts to feel like the only reason A happened was so that B could happen. It starts to feel very contrived and forced just so that we could introduce Thor or have an excuse for Hulk to rampage in the Helicarrier.
HOWEVER! When these events do happen, they happen marvelously. Where as the action scenes in Transformers put me to sleep. The action scenes in the Avengers grab my attention and don't let go to the very end. The characters are well defined, the movie keeps you in suspense, and the massive battle in New York City does not disappoint at all.
It is pure, unadulterated fun with funny one-liners and memorable moments.
Sure, it may have its moments of campiness and if you need a strong plot or character depth to enjoy the movie, you might not like this. This movie appeals to comic book fans and people who love to watch a great spectacle. The experience is better in the theaters but at home on your TV or computer monitor won't disappoint.
In short, if you're feeling a little bored, this movie is sure to perk you up.
The visual effects in this movie are out of this world! It really is spectacular and a joy to watch! The cinematography is likewise beautiful in this movie! But in the technical department all my praise and full respect goes to Alan Silvestri! His score for this movie blew me away! Especially, the "Avengers Assemble" tune! No gripes from me in the technical department!
As for the cast they are all terrific! Robert Downey Jr. is easily my favorite and probably the funniest in this movie! Mark Ruffalo makes the best Bruce Banner aka "The Hulk" to date, with a serious and human, yet comedic performance! Chris Evans is still quite good as Captain America. As far as performances go, this guy is probably the weakest. But he's still an awesome actor! Chris Hemsworth isn't a remarkable actor either, but he has nice charisma and fits the role as Thor! Scarlett Johansson is smoking hot and sexy, and much more relevant than she was in Iron Man 2! Jeremy Renner was just pure badass Agent Clint Barton aka Hawkeye! Samuel L. Jackson was epic and badass in the role of Nick Fury! Tom Hiddleston isn't exactly a really strong or serious villain. Mostly he just feels like a comic relief. But Hiddleston can act, and he's got a few agonizing scenes! Stellan Skarsgård and Cobie Smulders is also good in their supporting roles!
This compilation of Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital Copy an music is fine with respect to the first three aspects. The disc copies played fine in my blu-ray player and regular DVD player. The downloading of the digital copy went fairly smoothly with a Mac and iTunes. However, I'd have liked to get the actual soundtrack rather than "music inspired by the Avengers" with only one song that comes from the actual movie. Live to Rise is fine (ending credits) but that is the only song from the movie on this download. I might still have bought this set if I realized that, but I wish it had been clearer in the product description on Amazon. There is so much great music in that soundtrack - Captain America's theme, Black Widow's theme, the Avengers theme itself. Instead I got a lot of really screaming style rock & roll that I will never listen to again. I guess I have to go look to see if the actual soundtrack was released.
