One of the brilliant runs in Avengers history! A few points:

Villains - this is perhaps the greatest run of villains ever compressed into so few issues - Graviton and his origin, Ultron at his most terrifying, and Count Nefaria in perhaps his greatest appearance... as Superman! Each terrifically powerful and truly bad guys in their own unique style (Graviton arrogant and greedy, Nefaria manipulative desperate and ruthless, and Ultron as cold, driven and completely psychotic)

Artists: George Perez and John Byrne at the absolute peak of their artistic abilities, back to back! And Byrne one one of his precious few appearances on Avengers... And Pablo Marcos as one of the great unsung inkers in comics history, making both Perez and Byrne pencils their very best.

Cast: I think this is perhaps the greatest lineup of Avengers ever, each with their unique angle, certainly the most powerful ever assembled.

And they even threw in a clunker (Black Knight? Puh-lease) to remind you that hey, after all, they were still only 25 cents!

The state of Golden Age comics at their dynamic, colorful, action packed best - worth every penny!

Absolutely the middle of the greatest run EVER! I remember running into the drug store every month and praying they had the next issue of the MIGHTY AVENGERS! I was, am, will be, a giant fan of Thor so it just made sense that I would love the MIGHTY AVENGERS with Thor being the anchor of the group. The VISION VS. WOnderMAN! How cool. The VIsion was so cool but the writers had made him a jerk for a few issues just so you couldn't decide who to pull for. Graviton was so very powerful, seemingly unbeatable, and when they team up to catch the giant falling sphere...As a boy I would just stare at these frames for hours and imagine the combined powers of this group. Awesome! Thor arrived just in time to help out too! What can you say about the Count? Powerful! Evil! Been around forever! He literally doesn't even know his own strength! Seems like all is lost...then Thor arrives again! Turns out that the korvac saga is being set up about a year in advance. This is one reason I believe this was the greatest time for comics. I loved the art of the era as well. Can't believe I get to read it and read it and read it without destroying the comics themselves. Love the collections that are coming out today.

George Perez and John Byrne, two of the greatest artists in my lifetime. Stories were unbelievable. Thor coming in at the end was awesome.

Marvel's roster of villains contain some of the best characters in comic books. An A-Team that included the iconic likes of Dr. Doom, Loki, Dormammu, Thanos, Magneto and several others who could be consistently counted on to pull the chains and press the limits of our heroes and rock the Marvel Universe boat, where many times they just took it the extra mile and blew it out of the water.

But to my memory, none seem to savor this in such a diabolical manner as Ultron - the unfortunate invention of Avenger Henry Pym, a renegade robot who went bad. Despite the Masters of Evil, Red Skull, and Kang the Conqueror, for some reason, Ultron is the one I find that I remember most from those glory days. Perhaps its the shiny metallic visage with that wicked never changing robotic grin that stuck with me. Ultron is not a one-dimensional character. His reputation for being merciless and heartless was contradicted by his mechanized, unbridled passions, evil or otherwise, and his actual succumbing to his heartstrings that drove him to menace the Avengers over again and again and over the years attempt to create a bride, devoted to him and him only.

Firstly, I'm sure I am not the only one who sees in the "Bride of Ultron" story, the subtle and maybe not so subtle homage to the Universal monster films of the 1930's and 40's such as "Bride of Frankenstein" and "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" - to the over-sized lab with its dual operating tables surrounded by the electric gadgetry and machines to the close-up panels of the Avenger Wasp (Janet Van Dyne) and her robotic double (later named Jocasta) as the life is transferred from one to the other. Reading these pages, I could immediately imagine hearing the screeching and wailing electric machinery bellowing and building in the background while the drama builds as well as Janet desperately calls out to her husband to save her. And I won't deny that the panels with a dis-robed Jan with only the bands to secure her to the table hiding her modesty did not receive a few extra looks from this reader - (JVD was always an attractive woman) The "Bride" story alone is worth getting this book and is by far the best chapter in this particular collection.

However, some of the other chapters I found to be a bit weak. The Graviton and Count Nafaria storylines I enjoyed, especially the Nafaria episode drawn by John Byrne and particularly the panels with Thor battling the power-enhanced Count, but the chapters involving the Grim Reaper and Typhon I felt were uninspired. When I pick up the book to enjoy again, I find I often skip over these chapters.

Aside from Ultron and his Bride, the book focuses on Vision and Wonder Man (two favorite characters) and the not so obvious connection they have with the Scarlet Witch - what is very interesting is how that same relationship can be seen in Byrne's written and drawn book - West Coast Avengers - Vision Quest which came about 10 yrs later and you see how the relationship of these three characters has matured and transformed and how its impact is still felt but now on the west coast team.

I like this book overall and I like the scenes with Iron Man and Black Panther who often times gave this story a lot of substance as they balance the team with their analytical plans of action along with the muscle from Thor, Vision and Wonder Man while Hank Pym struggles with his issues (that poor guy is just bats)

Other than the weak middle chapters, I think most would enjoy "The Bride of Ultron" and is a definite must for fans of the classic Avengers.

this is perfect it has my two favorite artists john byrne and george perez. the stories and villians are classic greatness. why can't all graphic novels be like this? if you want to read the avengers at their peak of story and art then read this book as well as "the private war of doctor doom" and "the korvac saga" and you will wonder why they ever changed the way comics are done.
enjoy

This has some of the best story lines that kept the book going after the Engleheart era. Gravitron and the Count showed the Avengers against truly titanic foes. The splash panel where the Avengers are coming up behind Gravitron should be a poster.
