Jonathan Hickman (born September 3, 1972, South Carolina) is an American comic book writer and artist. He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF and S.H.I.E.L.D. titles. In 2012, Hickman ended his run on the Fantastic Four titles to write Avengers and New Avengers, as part the "Marvel NOW!" relaunch. In 2013, Hickman wrote a six-part miniseries, Infinity, plus Avengers tie-ins for Marvel Comics. As of 2015, he is writing the crossover event Secret Wars.

I go back and forth on Hickman's Avengers run. On the one hand, it was my introduction to Thanos, and I loved the Black Order that he introduced as well as the Outriders and other various characters. On the other hand, it was the introduction to Thane. So you get a little, you give a little. But I'd consider it a good purchase overall. This omnibus sets the scene for last decent Marvel event, Secret Wars, before they swirled into mediocrity and boredom with Secret Empire and Civil War II. You get some great scenes with Namor and T'challa, as well as seeing Shuri as the Queen of Wakanda.

As far as the book itself, it's a bit chunky. Marvel lately has been pretty darn good with their omnibus quality, but for some reason this one was far more prone to spinal wear than even bigger books like World War Hulk and Waid's Captain America. Not sure if it was just my copy but I figure it's worth mentioning.

Overall I'd probably give it around a 3.5 or so if there were half grades. You'll probably want to pick up Volume 2 when it comes out next month though if you enjoyed this. And then the Secret Wars hardcover. And then oh dangit Marvel you did it again and took all my money...

I haven't been following on going comic book series for a while, but remember very fondly reading Hickman's Avengers (and the fantastic Secret Wars). The book has aged phenomenally, and I see even the upcoming Avengers movie is taken some cues from this run (ie, Thanos's Cabal). As in much of Hickman's work, Avengers and New Avengers revel in not revealing everything to the reader until later in the story. The art is great, with folks like Deodato providing some of the best, if a bit traditional art work.

I also enjoy how the two books (Avengers and New Avengers) are presented in somewhat chronological order, which makes for a very satisfying read.

Hickman's Avengers run is one of the greatest and most epic tales ever told in a graphic novel, with beautiful artwork that does justice to the story and characters. This is Vol 1 of 2, and I have both. The story is chock full of dozens of characters, many of whom (Tony, Steve, T'Challa, Namor especially) get really complex and satisfying arcs. It's spliced with complex science fiction ideas and mysticism, and it completely remakes the Marvel Universe status quo by setting the table for Secret Wars. Must read stuff for any Marvel aficionado!

Loved this read. The story was a little hard to follow at first, but reading it a second time. Now knowing that this is basically a fresh start for the avengers, your won't need to know anything before hand or any previous stories. Can't really think of any cons for this. The spine and bindings are still holding up, I did stretch the spine before reading it. And would suggest doing so before hand.

Hmmmmmm. How best to describe this book?

In one word?

"WOW"

Yep. That pretty much sums it up. This omnibus collects the first half of hickmans avengers run. And it has some truly epic moments. And damn.... this book is dense, storywise. Hickman really loves world building. He really is creating an epic here.

As for the book itself? Sewn binding. No getter loss. Stays open on the first page. Standard marvel omnibus.

One thing i love though? This book collects a few different titles like "the avengers" "new avengers" and the "infinity" mini series. And i put into chronological order! Which is awesome. It reads very well as a whole. Unlike the "war of kings ominbus" which was put in order of title series. Now that was just one huge pain to read. Flipping back and forth if you wanted to read it in proper order. So props to marvel for doing this book right!

All in all? Buy this book. Like now. Just do it.

My only question though?

When is volume 2 coming out?????

Such an epic telling of the 1st half of the saga that will culminate into Secret Wars.
It includes the 1st appearance of Thanos' Black Order, whose part in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame was primordial to the movie saga! And they're only in a small part of the book!!

Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers run is a masterpiece of imagination and storytelling. It’s remarkable how this genius handles the complexe story he started to tell. The stories are on point, the countless characters are handled true to themselves and the complexe narration is executed in a perfect manner. Definitively one of the greatest storylines Marvel published in the last decade.

The Omnibus Edition is perfect as well. And it's really a monster. If you ever should be in a situation to face an intruder – this is the weapon of choice to defend yourself. And this is what books are also for – not just to let you dream, but also to have a pratical use.

I’m really happy to preordered it and I can't wait for the next volume.
