These are nice brakes when they are perfectly calibrated. If you are installing them yourself I would suggest the business card method searched for online, in which you align the outer caliper (the actuating side) by placing a business card between the outer caliper housing and the outward facing side of the disc rotor, then tighten the two adjustable housing mount screws that attach the housing to the bracket. The reason for this is because of poor engineering on the manufacturers part, since the outer caliper is not adjustable other than by brake cable tension. You will find that most of the actuation of the cable pull is wasted since the pad will not protrude beyond the brake housing until you have the cable pull arm almost 80% of the full actuation, and at full actuation you will not be able to get any more braking power. This is why the outer surface of the disc needs to be as close to the brake housing as possible. Once the outer side is set you can adjust the inner (stationary) adjustment dial to get the inner brake pad as close to the inside of the disc rotor as possible without scraping. As you wear into the pads you may find that even the inner pad will have to be adjusted to push in as far as it will go. It will be a good idea to keep some spare pads handy if you do a lot of heavy braking. I was thinking even a thin round metal shim behind the outer pad would help reduce the unnecessary amount of actuation that needs to be pre-loaded on the cable pull arm. If you would like to avoid all this trouble, spend the extra money on the Avid BB7 MTB G2 Front or Rear Rotor which I also have installed on another bike of mine. With the BB7s, in addition to the ease of installation/adjustment, you also have larger surface area of the brake pads which greatly increase the stopping power and reduce wear.

Since only the inboard brake pad can be directly adjusted, I had to choose between having the brake rub constantly, or having the brake grip inadequately, or having excessively long brake lever pull. Realigning the whole brake body took lots of time, and gave little improvement. I've been much happier with the BB7.

So, no problems with the brake but the rotor is pretty low end. After upgrading to Avid's G2 Clean sweep rotor I find it would have been less costly to buy the BB7 brake kit as it includes a better quality rotor and caliper.

I bought the new brake system to replace a bent break rotor on my bike. they were very easy to install. everything you need is in the box. I have several bike trips on the new brakes and they are working perfectly. I would recommend these to anyone who wants good stopping power for a great price

I have been using the Avid BB5's on my commuter bike for four years and have never been happy with them. They go out of adjustment frequently (the inside pad wears and needs to be adjusted) and braking power fades dramatically when not precisely adjusted. Even when properly adjusted the pads tend to rub on the rotor and and make a scraping noise. I will never buy Avid brakes again. Am currently replacing them with Shimano hydraulic brakes.

Putting this on was a little more complicated than necessary, and it doesn't come with a lever or brake cables. At $41 for no brake cables/lever, it's not a good deal, especially if you don't need a rotor (which is included). Hydralic brakes are a substantial upgrade and I wish I had gone with those instead.

Amazingly, the printed directions are half-printed! Wth?

An excellent mech brake for the price in my opinion. These are particulary good if you are upgrading from cheap tektro novella brakes. I was able to continue using my tektro rotors which seem to be wider than the included rotor with the bb5, allowing it to brake better due to more contact surface with the pad. It is nice having a twist knob to adjust the inner brake pad, this was not a feature on my stock brakes. Solid upgrade!

This was my first experience with disc brakes and at first I was feeling good as if I was moving up to a superior technology over rim rubber pad brakes. Wow, was I ever wrong. These brakes are totally annoying. They are hard to adjust to a point where you have strong stopping power without having to hear the disk and pad scraping as you ride along. Speaking of strong stopping power, don't expect much from the BB5. They slow you down but never even approach the stopping power of my "primitive" rim brakes. When you do apply the brakes going down a steep hill you get to hear a very annoying squealing scratching sound. Also, if you have to make an adjustment be very careful as the the disk gets super hot so you can easily burn you fingers when you reach in to make an adjustment. Taking the wheel off and getting it back on is also a real pain as the pads fight you from putting the wheel back on easily. You need to replace the pads more often than rim pads and they are both more expensive and harder to install. All in all, I never want to see BB5 disk brakes on my bike again. I upgraded to the BB7's and these are far better. No problems at all with the BB7 brakes.
