AvoDerm premium dog and cat food formulas are loaded with high quality meat proteins, wholesome grains, antioxidant nutrients plus vitamins and minerals for inside health and California avocados for healthy skin and coat on the outside. AvoDerm is formulated and produced by Breeder's Choice Pet Foods. An industry innovator in new product development since its early days of providing high quality, diet-specific foods to breeders and zoos, the company is regarded by the industry as one of the purest, premium makers of natural pet foods for dogs and cats. Although many of its products were developed for specific pet health concerns, all are intended to be used as ongoing preventative care in adding longevity to a pet’s life.
Nutrient-dense and high in crude fiber, avocados aren’t called the ACE of fruits for nothing—vitamins A, C and E are there in abundance, as is B6. Avocados are also rich in folate, potassium, niacin, essential fatty acids and many other nutrients essential to good skin and coat health as well as good overall health.
The right nutrients in the right proportions are indispensable to keeping your dog's or cat’s skin healthy. Remember, skin and coat problems are never just cosmetic. Symptoms such as hair loss, thinning coats, dullness, dry skin, thickened skin, matted hair, infections and odors can usually be traced back to either a shortage or an excess of a specific nutrient. In fact, there is no more visible indicator of problems with your dog's or cat's overall health than problems with his skin and coat. Fortunately, many of the nutrients your dog or cat needs for a healthy skin and coat can be found in rich amounts in the remarkable fruit known as the avocado.

Switching to AvoDerm Natural
When switching to AvoDerm, we recommend that you switch your pet over slowly. This is very important so you don’t disrupt your pet’s digestive pattern. Changing foods will often cause vomiting or diarrhea if not done correctly. Therefore, we recommend a 5-day transition before you begin feeding AvoDerm exclusively. The switch is an easy transition that includes both AvoDerm and your pet’s old brand. For the first two days, feed 20% AvoDerm and 80% of the old brand. For the next two days, feed 50% AvoDerm and 50% of your pet’s old brand. On day 5, feed 80% AvoDerm and 20% of the old brand. On the 6th day, you can feel confident feeding AvoDerm for the rest of your pet’s life.

I took over Eddie's care when a friend's circumstances changed. Eddie (a mix of many breeds - a 55lb mostly black, long-haired dog) came to me at the age of 13, with large patches of missing hair, scratching constantly, lots of pink skin and he smelled terrible. He was a mess.
At first, I thought many of his issues were age related. It took a couple of weeks and some reading before I realized he probably had a food allergy. If this were the case, I figured it would not be be too difficult or expensive to try to solve so after a bit more reading I ordered his first bag of Avoderm Senior.
I gradually starting adding Avoderm to his other food so as not to shock his digestive system. After about a week he was on pure Avoderm. At the same time I got rid of all treats that contained any grain. Once these two things were done the changes began in earnest.
If I could have imagined the transformation I would have taken "before" photos but at that time Eddie wasn't a photogenic dog and I never considered how much he would change.
After about 5 days on a straight Avoderm diet (and grain free treats) the areas of missing hair began noticeably filling in. He still needed a bath once a week not to stink horribly and he still itched terribly, and his skin was still pink, but I figured - a step in the right direction so hang in there and see.
By the time he was near the end of the first bag (about 6 weeks) the only remaining areas of sparse fur or baldness were his back feet, a portion of his tail and his chest near his front legs. His skin was still pinkish and he still scratched a bit but nothing like before. He could go longer between baths before the odor was unbearable. His energy was noticeably improved.
So, I ordered a second bag.
Eddie recently finished that and started on his third bag. He has now been on Avoderm Senior for a bit over three months and has had no wheat, corn or soy from other sources. I last bathed him over a month ago and still no no unpleasant odor. The last bald spot on his tail finished filling in about 2 weeks ago and his fur is now thick and lustrous. In fact he looks too heavy because his fur is so thick around his haunches - where his worst bald spots used to be though his actual weight is almost unchanged. All the hair under his belly and on his legs has filled in. He had circles around his eyes that I was sure were age related, but they have disappeared too as the hair there filled in.
None of his skin is pink and he rarely scratches. His energy levels are so good that it's almost annoying but also a delight to see. When we go outside he runs very fast, bounces and plays like you'd expect from a much younger dog. He seems very healthy and happy now. The transformation is nothing short of amazing.
Avoderm may not be right for your dog, but if you suspect your canine friend suffers from food related issues it's worth a try. If it doesn't agree with your dog then try something else but if it does and if you see improvement, hang in there for a while. It probably took a long time for your dog's problems to manifest so it will take some time for them to resolve but this just might be what you friend needs to feel better.
Now with that said, I think this is really good dog food. Grain-free is always a good thing, and my dog devours it ravenously (there isn't much my dog WON'T eat, but he attacks this stuff with vigor). The size of the kibble is a bit larger than I would prefer (my dog is a 20-lb Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix), but obviously he doesn't have a problem with that. I really appreciate finding a senior formula made with something other than chicken, too. Perhaps that's why my dog loves it so much, something different for his palatte. And it's good for him... 28% protein vs 10% fat is a darn good ratio, plus the food helps support healthy joints, eyesight, brain power, and his immune system (or so the packaging claims, and I haven't witnessed anything to the contrary). So honestly, if it weren't for the 80% price hike (which is why only 4 stars, by the way), I'd be extremely happy continuing to feed this to my dog. If YOU don't mind paying the premium price, however, then I believe this would be a wise choice for your senior companion.
I decided to try AvoDerm on my eldest dachshund, now nine years old; she had always been persnickety about her foods. She nibbled at AvoDerm, then snubbed it entirely. My younger adult doxie is four years old, and will eat just about anything - - - this appetite would be to her detriment. She had always been well-behaved regarding potty-training, but in apparent gastric distress, she soiled the carpets repeatedly. Took her off AvoDerm, and all is normal, a day later.
There is something in this formulation that does not agree with my dogs. Be forewarned. The AvoDerm formula is apparently a work in progress, not yet perfected. Avocado is indeed a human superfood. Dogs suffer no ill effects from avocado, but - - -
I have read in other reviews that the yellowish kibble may be suspect, as opposed to the tried and true (the trustworthy) dark brown kibble. The mix in this bag had the brown and yellow kibble in equal proportions. Is there the possibility that organically-grown vegetables, while theoretically better for nutrition, be suffering from the "Chipotle restaurant syndrome"? Simply buying organically-grown produce is not a guarantee of quality, especially if that produce somehow got contaminated in the processing. This errant philosophy is probably what nearly sunk the Chipotle restaurant chain.
AvoDerm is an unfamiliar brand in my household, and will never be incorporated in my pets' diets until further reviews indicate that the formulation is OK. Remember - - - my batch may be a rare contaminated one.
