Avoiding Breast Cancer While Balancing Your Hormones by Joseph McWherter MD

Any woman hesitant about hormone replacement because of fear of breast cancer should read this book.

Joseph McWherter MD, an OB/Gyne doctor in Texas with a large natural hormone practice, wrote this book in response to the Women's Health Initiative Study (WHI) published in JAMA in 2002. The WHI Study was halted early because of increased heart disease and breast cancer. As usual, the newspaper headlines were misleading and got the story wrong, failing to mention the important distinction between the unsafe synthetic hormones used in the WHI study, and the safe natural hormones used by Dr. McWherter and many others.

Chapter 2 discusses the causes of breast cancer, namely accumulated DNA damage related to junk food diets, stressful lifestyle, environmental toxins, radiation, hormonal imbalance, and genetic predispositions, etc.

Chapter 3, Estrogen Explained, goes over rather detailed and technical information about the three types of human estrogens (E1,E2,E3) and their metabolism. Also clarified are the differences between synthetic estrogen, natural estrogen, xeno-estrogen and phyto-estrogen.

Chapter 4 is devoted to explaining the WHI Women's Health Initiative Study, and a discussion of the importance of testing estrogen metabolites, namely the 2/16 hydroxy-estrogen ratio. Increasing this 2/16 ratio by consuming broccoli, or with supplements such as I3C and DIM reduces breast cancer risk.

Separate chapters are devoted to exercise, diet, and detoxification, all very detailed and complete. Before studying medicine, Dr. McWherter was a mathematician, and he covers these topics with mathematical precision.

This book was purchased when I visited Dr. McWherter recently. It was written mainly for his patients to explain the myriad of things that usually go right over the top of their heads. Though much of it is too deep for me, it does explain how to determine hormone levels by symptoms, and gives much important, practical information in many various areas (including exercise, stress reduction, and nutrition) which will help us to avoid not only breast cancer, but most of the diseases of aging. Lots of questionaires and lists in the appendix and specific ways to detoxify our bodies.

I am a new patient of Dr. McWherter, and love his book. It is a bit dated, but I'd say 95% of the information is right on the money. Recent studies don't recommend canola oil because it is inflammatory; and excessive cardio is inflammatory (HIIT training should be used instead). I am a breast cancer survivor, and am following a naturalistic, holistic approach to combatting recurrent breast cancer without ANY conventional medications. I had a bilateral mastectomy with no metastasis and no lymph node involvement. I will follow Dr. McWherter's FEM Care Program for the rest of my life, I HIGHLY recommend this book for all women, especially breast cancer survivors!

Dr. McWherter presents a very unique and well thought out, scientifically based approach to breast cancer prevention, bringing to the forefront the importance of the intracellular matrix, not seen in other approaches that I have seen. Excellent review of hormonal physiology.
