Awake, Not Woke: A Christian Response to the Cult of Progressive Ideology Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 600 ratings

“Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.”—Ephesians 5:14 The long-simmering crisis that grips our culture has exploded in recent years, leaving us divided and intransigent. Discourse seems futile when we are no longer a people with shared principles or even a shared understanding of reality. What seems obvious to one person is patently absurd to the next. This collapse of meaning is not accidental. It has been plotted and documented for decades, and now presents in its current form as Woke ideology. Awake, Not Woke unmasks this ideology by examining its history, major players, premises, and tactics, showing us that “Wokeness” at its core is an ideology of rupture. Indeed, it is an ideology with fundamentalist and even cult-like characteristics that is on a collision course with Christianity. With a wit and clarity that both exposes the absurd and mourns the brokenness of our culture, Noelle Mering provides answers to such questions as: Why does tolerance seem to only go in one direction? How does the ideology create enemies, eroding friendship across the sexes and races? Why is violence the natural end of Woke ideology? Why are the Woke considered blameless? Why have politics become all-absorbing?Why is the corruption of children a logical outgrowth of Woke principles? How is the movement fundamentally a rejection of the Logos? This is a spiritual battle, and it is not accidental. The architects of revolution have long known that the transformation of the West had to come by way of destabilizing the social, familial, and religious pieties of a citizenry. But there is a road to restoration, and it begins with identifying and understanding the operating principles of the Woke movement. While the revolution is a counterfeit religion resulting in alienation and division, the One True Faith brings restoration. It is this restoration -- of the person, the family, and the Faith -- for which we all hunger and is the most fitting avenue toward a more harmonious and whole society

Review

“Noelle Mering’s Awake, Not Woke is essential reading to understand the dominant views of social justice today. It is an engaging and serious book that distills the animating principles of the “woke” movement, and explains the intellectual history behind it.  But Mering doesn’t stop at critical analysis. She takes seriously the claims and grievances of racism, injustice, and abuse and offers a response rooted not in power and conflict, but in deep interpersonal relationships and the human need to live in truth and to be known and loved.”

-Michael Miller, Senior Research Fellow at the Acton Institute and Director and Producer of
Poverty Inc.

Awake, Not Woke presents a clear and crushing critique of an ideology that is at this very moment poisoning our culture. With tremendous skill, wit, understanding, and compassion, Noelle Mering traces the historical roots of wokism, its dogmas and methods of indoctrination, and its heart-breaking fruits. She also identifies the path to restoration. How I wish every American could read this book!”

– Kenneth Hensley, co-author of
The Godless Delusion and host of ‘On the Journey’ show and podcast

“A powerful pseudo-religious movement now threatens the very survival of Christianity in the west. Christians and their leaders not only refuse to confront this dangerous political and cultural revolution, but increasingly embrace its destructive heresies. Others realize they are under attack but are confused about why and what to do about it. Noelle Mering is the brave, insightful, and vital prophetic voice they desperately need to understand what is happening, and how to counter it. She elegantly exposes this movement for what it is. All Christians—and anyone seeking to understand what is now happening in America—need to read it.”

-- Matthew J. Peterson, Founding Editor of The American Mind and Vice President of Education at The Claremont Institute

“Noelle Mering pierces the dark heart of wokery, and, with her characteristically engaging and often funny prose, sheds bright light on matters notorious for their heat. This is the field manual of bad ideas we have been waiting for. Highly recommended.”

Awake, Not Woke is an invaluable resource for today’s cultural confusion. Mering deftly sifts through the jargon to understand, explain, and refute, the current state of the Progressive movement. Though analyzed in a Christian context, much of the weight of the argument is grounded in universal principles of human nature. It’s a book driven less by politics and more for the care for people and concern for the wide and lasting harm of a dehumanizing ideology.

We are in a spiritual battle! We must ask God for wisdom and favor to combat the wiles and strategies of the evil one. This book gives us leverage and a tool to address the radicals head on! Beautifully done and articulated!

I usually read the bad reviews before I buy anything and I did so in this case. As I got into the book I couldn’t understand what they were talking about. It’s not repetitive, rambling, disorganized, etc. Looked at them again and 5 out of 6 are from unverified purchasers who probably feel threatened by exposition of the truth.
She does an excellent job of tracing the roots of the woke movement (please don’t pretend you don’t know what the term means, some of you) from Marx to the Frankfort School, and explains what they intend to accomplish and how.
It is criminal that a substantial number of young people are lost in this trap, that is really the result of the breakdown of the family unit, a stated goal of the its founders..
The book also causes you, me anyway, to pray for its victims, young people and not so young anymore, who have been lied to and manipulated to the point where madness and rage seems to be everywhere. Another goal of its proponents.
It will fail in the end, but not before more damage has been done.
Excellent book.

FANTASTIC, timely, book. The author convincingly demonstrates through plentiful documentation that Marxist thought and the progressive movement are behind the vexing and paralyzing polarization which has taken hold in Western society. From tolerance of street violence to racialized politics and sexualization of young children, the historical roots are traced and exposed in AWAKE NOT WOKE. She has distilled into a very readable, page-turner-of-a-book, much of the same scholarship & reporting as independent journalist, Christopher Rufo, in his recent book, AMERICA'S CULTURAL REVOLUTION (which I have also read). I like Mering's better because it adds the Christian analysis and critique and includes pithy quotes from Augustine and Aquinas, while Rufo writes from a strictly secular perspective. I would love to see Mering interviewed by Jordan Peterson. She is that smart and articulate. Brava, Noelle Mering! (Mother of SIX! Wow! How does she do it??) My one criticism of the book is that she doesn't spend enough time suggesting how to arrest this revolutionary juggernaut, which is destructive by design. AWAKE NOT WOKE is available on Audible and Kindle. Much cheaper than the hardback, which I purchased. Whatever she writes next I will buy.

This book dives deep into the Woke movement. It is eye opening and fascinating, not merely a soapbox lecture or editorial. This movement has dived deep into the core of society with many of us not fully understanding where it came from and what it is about. If you want to understand it, you probably cannot do better than to read this well written and compelling book.

It’s a short read, but not superficial. I expected and got many questions answered without the author spinning me into a cycle of more questions than answers.

There was less of solution than wished for, yet it left me with a nagging feeling that a solution isn’t and wasn’t ever a purpose. My role going forward is or will become that part of the greater solution. To that extent I am grateful to the author.

Every Christian should read this book. Every person who professes intelligence should read this book. Every person who wonders about the direction of our country should read this book.
It's not chock full of answers, but full of explanations of the society of today. Is it unbiased? Not really, but it doesn't claim to be.

I walk away from Mering’s book with a deeper understanding of how we got to where we are today - She explains the situation vividly. And now my heart is heavy but I am AWAKE to the reality of it all. She takes you behind the chaos of the headlines and answers you with a great piecing together of God’s hand in history and mankind’s hand against Him.

Woke ideology pervades much of contemporary culture. Noelle Mering offers a careful and thorough analysis of its origins, philosophical roots and a proposal for a sound and loving but firm and powerful response by the church.

A must read for anyone troubled by the Woke contribution to the ever-accelerating decay of Western Culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars USEFUL BUT LACKS HEFT
Reviewed in France on August 11, 2021
The author is well-intentioned and there is merit in having the conversation. However, the writing is sloppy, much too often superficial and often, frankly, weak. I expected a much more coherent, trenchant breaking down of the collective breakdown in dispassionate scholarship that currently consumes American society. Indeed, it is primarily an American affliction that roils public discourse today. Shocking events such as homicidal police atrocities ignited a legitimate analysis of pervasive bigotry that in America continues to destroy lives. Meanwhile, undeniably, the same explosive violence is exceedingly rare in other Western countries, and unusual in most non-Western countries as well. When officers of the Turkish state or KSA kill suspects, there is an international outcry that can last months. When it happens in Russia, the names of Politkovskaya, Magnitsky, Nemtsov remain engraved on everyone's memory for decades... But in America, the list of names of Americans killed by police is very, very, very long. Most are Black or Hispanic. When there are school shootings, almost always the shooters are white youths (with notable exceptions such as Cho) & so are most victims. But with violent crimes committed by US police, the victims are disproportionately Americans of color. Sooner or later, mass protests were bound to erupt! The killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, poorly handled by a restrained AG Holder under President Obama, inevitably only added fuel to simmering grievances. From there, tensions could only escalate, what with Trump`s incendiary incitement, the murder of Botham Jean in his home by a racist white woman cop, so many other senseless police killings of Black Americans, and finally the notorious public asphyxiation of George Floyd in front of a CROWD of eyewitnesses! It would have been strange if riots had not at some point broken out. Tragically -- for America, for this is primarily an American problem -- all kinds of opportunistic demagogues and wannabe celebrities seized upon a terrible tragedy, unfolding against the backdrop of a polarizing national election, to promote frankly nutty and half-baked ideas, few of which deserve to be treated as seriously as the author chooses to frame them. While the tracing of historical antecedents is very much worthwhile, I find it impossible to feel all of civilization, or all of Christianity, is threatened by these uniquely American, parochial, provincial fits and conniptions. They may tip the outcome of the next election cycles, but they will not actually change how the majority of human beings thinks, acts, speaks, decides, believes or prays. On the spectrum of presentations of traditional thinking, this book is a welcome addition -- but weak. To win the argument decisively takes much stronger language, less glossing over, more logical extrapolation. This is diluted content, sprinkled with quotes from famous sources strung together like beads. Not nearly the force and rigor called for -- if one actually feels alarm, that is.

Wanting to understand more, this was a good intro into understanding the background and influence of social marxism through the culture of woke.
Some parts of the book are fluid and logical , but there are sections that left me a little puzzled as to how it all fits together.
That said, an excellent read!
