First, I wish to echo Brookyner's excellent review.

Brotherly love seems to be a favorite of some authors, whether it's brother to brother, uncle to nephew, cousin to cousin, etc. The first story, Awaken Forest is fairy typical of that type.

The second story "Loose Bonds' is my absolute favorite. (For me 5 stars) I'm not going to say much but it is written on two levels, the second of which only becomes apparant after you've read the story the first time. Then when you reread the story it becomes chilling. I like stories that end with a twist especially a DARK twist, and this one certainly did. It reminds me of one of the stories in "Weekend Lovers" called Fragments of Glass and Dark Water. There were two levels going on in that one, and it immediately needed a reread.

The third story involves an employer-employee relationship that has plenty of misunderstandings and a forced scene occurs. I also think this gave the story some passion.

I'm glad I bought this before it was no longer available, especially for the sake of that second story. It was definitely good for a few fantasies. However, I wouldn't spend a lot of money for it in the resale market. This is one of those books that will not be a favorite with a lot of people for a lot of reasons. But, for a person like me who likes a different story once in a while, "Loose Bonds" certainly fits the bill.

I am surprised at the low rating for this so totally brilliant manga, but I suppose the reason being that it is "different" than normal yaoi. You know the ones with dark themes and such. In this particular yaoi story all the seme's tend to hide their dark side from the uke and use their evil twisted ways to lead the uke into thei web of lust.

The main story, Awaken Forest, is about newbie editor for a publishing company named Yoshi who finds himself in charge of helping a very famous novelist reach his deadline by the name of Orito Suga. Now this novelist has an older brother, Masato, whom Yoshi (the uke) finds very attractive. But the more he spends time with these two close brothers the more he begins to suspect that something more is going on between the two. Something more...intimate. What Yoshi doesn't know is that Orito Suga has a dark secret that not even his older brother knows about, and is actually using that secret against his older brother to control him!. And it's obvious Masato has feelings for Yoshi, too. And Orito Suga does NOT like that....!

The second story, my absolute favorite (too bad it's so damn short): Loose Bonds. Now this story is purely evil and psychological! At least on the Seme's side! I'm saying this because the uke is totally oblivious to his friend's physical attraction to him and the seme will do about anything and I mean ANYTHING to get uke to depend on him and him alone. In the seme's words: "If you don't want him to go outside then make him never want to. " Even if it means taking away everything he holds dear...

The last and final story is of no importance to me, I didn't find it at all good, and I'm sorry but I will not review that one. Ill just leave up to the readers to judge it, ok? Ok!

Awaken Forest is actually the first story in this anthology. With a total of four chapters plus an Afterword, there are a total of three stories presented in this Boy's Love collection. The final story is present as two separate chapters, so the book is actually more substantial than it initially sounds. I'll take a look at each of the stories in turn.

Awaken Forest is the longest, at 90 pages. Yoshimori is the new guy at S Publishing, and is excited to get the opportunity to meet a novelist he greatly admires. Suga sensei is the youngest recipient of the (imaginary) Kawaki Literature Award, and getting to meet his idol has Yoshimori so flustered that he flubs presenting his business card and then further makes a spectacle of himself by knocking red wine from a waiter's tray onto his suit. He is startled when Suga sensei's attendant and elder brother, Masato, leaves Suga's side to help him clean up. Nonetheless, he is really happy to learn that Suga sensei is at last penning a sequel to his award winning novel, and has sent for him personally to come out to his home in the mountains to collect it for the publisher. Only things don't go as planned. First, his taxi breaks down, and he ends up walking for an hour up a desolate road in the sweltering Japanese summer heat, and so passes out. Then it seems that sensei is not only not actually finished with his novel, but that Masato is against him writing it full stop. Events come to pass whereby Yoshimori becomes aware that the taboo and emotionally fraught plot of the original novel is actually biographical. Even more confusing, Suga seems to have ulterior motives for both writing the sequel and inviting Yoshimori in particular.
