I highly recommend this book to readers that enjoy paranormal novels, especially those who enjoy werewolf stories. Don't pigeon hole this novel as it also appeals to teenage readers, LGBTQ readers and open minded people in general.
Personally, I enjoyed "Awakened" for numerous reasons. Harsh language WAS NOT relied upon as filler for poor dialogue. Character development was nicely done. Intimacy was kept to a level of kissing and touching making it appropriate to younger readers. I like the fact that Caleb felt awkward, self-conscious and vulnerable. I especially like the balanced way that Caleb develops during the novel. I especially liked how many of his values and desires were reflected in his resolution of the challenges he faced. I do not like violence though it is a part of our lives and is an iatrical part of nature. The violence within "Awakened" was described appropriately and not sensationalized. The blending of the social structure of the pack with human values is a fascinating aspect of this story. Caleb is a main character that happens to be gay. This is not a story about being gay; rather it is a story that could have centered on numerous types of characters. This is a story that challenged me to think and evaluate how we interact with each other.
As a side note: I encourage readers of self-published materials to let go of their expectation for perfection and to allow themselves to savor the experience. Just as a hike may cause some blisters, bug bites and a few scratches, diving into a self-published novel has unique flaws that add rather than detract from the total experience. Just as the self-publications of music on the internet has allowed audiences to discover music and artists that they otherwise would not have known, self-published novels on Amazon and other websites allows readers to discover writers and creative works outside of the book publication industry. Creativity experienced in a less refined form provides the reader with the opportunity to be closer to the author's creative process.
I will not lie, the book does have a few rough spots, but nothing extreme; all easily overlooked and not really distracting from the story. What he does not fall short on by far is character development, especially when it comes to the interactions between Caleb and Adam.
Overall I very much enjoyed the read, and am looking forward to the sequel, hopefully coming out soon! If you're looking for a quick and enjoyable werewolf story with an interesting new take on werewolf mechanics, this is a good book to read!
I was thoroughly impressed by this novel and enjoyed following Caleb, a young gay teen, on his journey through his awakening. The author takes a unique perspective on an old story enabling the readers' imagination to run rampant as he twists and turns throughout this suspenseful work of fiction.
I highly ecommend this story to not just youg adults, but all readers of the paranormal. The author has wet my appetite for the awakened series and I can't wait for book 2!!!
I really look forward to his next book. I wish it would have lasted. This is a good book that I would encourage anyone who's into this genre to buy. You won't be disappointed.
