As usual, Ms. Neels delivered a pleasant and easy read. She tends to ramble on overly about food, and her heroine's are always unbelievably demure, virginal and positively Victorian in their old-fashioned views. That being said, I enjoy her books and find them a comforting read. Our Heroine in this story seems remarkably un-self aware, but it is a charming read.

I recently wrote a review of A Girl in a Million by Betty Neels and I did not particularly like it because I just didn't like the hero, Marius. I said in that review that I would read at least one more book by this author because she has written over 130 books and I hoped I would end up liking her so I would have this new source of books to read.

I'm so glad that I decided to try another of her books. I just finished The Awakened Heart and I loved it! The wealthy and famous heart surgeon from Holland falls in love at first sight with Sophie, who is a nurse at one of the hospitals in London in which he has patients. Because he doesn't think she will believe he fell in love with her at first sight, he keeps his feelings for her hidden and asks her to marry him just because they are "friends" and will be good companions to each other. She agrees to this type of marriage because she doesn't know he is in love with her and she does know that she is not in love with him and thinks she never will be in love with him or anyone else. Several years ago she had a relationship that ended very badly and she isn't eager to have her heart broken again. So this marriage for companionship sounds like a pretty good deal to her.

As much as I disliked Marius in A Girl in a Million, I LOVED Rijk. Are you ready for this? His full name is Rijk van Taak ter Wijsma. I have no idea how to pronounce any of that so I just called him Van in my mind because that was the only one of his names I could pronounce. Name notwithstanding, I adored him and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I pretty much didn't put it down until I finished it.

Earlier I said he fell in love with her at first sight. I loved how that first meeting took place! I can see this as the opening scene of a movie!

Book Description: Shouldn't There Be Love, As Well? Devastated by a love affair that had gone wrong, Sophie was determined to avoid any more heartache. Then one day the brilliant brain surgeon Rijk van Taak appeared in her life. He, too, had been hurt in the past -- and made it clear that he now wanted a companion rather than a wife. Sophie was pleased to accept his proposal on that basis alone. ...But her heart seemed to have other ideas!

When Dutch Brain Surgeon Dr. Rijk van Taak ter Wijsma proposed to Sophie Blount there was no romance, no roses, and no declaration of love. However there was a kiss - - - on the cheek. This was to be a marriage of convenience. That was fine with Sophie; she decided long ago that romance was not for her. Once bitten, twice shy - she had been burned by love once and was content to enter into a comfortable, companionable marriage. After all, she liked Rijk, they were friends, and they would be content and happy together. They would not have to contend with the highs and lows of love and/or passion. But what would she do now that she felt those emotions and more because Rijk awakened her heart?

A pleasant marriage-of-convenience story sure to please any Neels fan.

I have been buying Betty Neels books for my mother (in her 70's) at her request, as an introduction to using a Kindle. I can say without hesitation that she loves all of these books. As she has said, "The plots may all be somewhat similar and the stories quaint, but I enjoy them immensely and find them endearing." What better recommendation could there be? She now has almost every Betty Neels book available for the Kindle. (And the Kindle Paperwhite? She loves the backlight and the ability to make the font larger.)

The book arrived in timely fashion, in good condition and was written in Betty Neels' usual good style. She starts with a heroine, Sophie, whose past experience with love puts her on
guard against future encounters, and brings Sophie around to a realistic appreciation of love
by the end of the book. Ms. Neels' characters are well drawn and engage the empathy of the
reader.

Another wonderful romance from Betty Neels. An honorable man who falls in love with a beautiful girl. Wish she had given us a glimpse of their married life, after they fell in love.
