Ruby Iyer is the key to the Many Lives series. Growing up in Bombay I was weighed down by the expectations of traditional Indian society. Yet, I wanted to be economically independent. So, daily I would leave the relative safety of home, knowing that my commute to work was going to be nightmarish.

It's just how public transport still is in this city. When you get on a bus you know that the man standing behind is going to brush against you. When you walk through a crowded local train platform, you accept that you are probably going to be felt up. Every time this happened to me, I would get very angry.

But, I would deal with it and get on, because if I raised my voice or did something about it, the results would not bode well. So, a few years ago when a young photojournalist was raped in the center of Bombay in broad daylight, I was furious.

It was as if nothing had changed in all the years I'd been away.

Then, I had a vision of this young girl who would not back down anymore; who would stand up for herself regardless of the consequences. Who would follow her heart ... Thus Ruby Iyer was born.

With Ruby came the dystopian Bombay setting where many of the MANY LIVES stories are set.

In fact, every single word I have written since 2009 has fit within the Many Lives Universe. These characters and their love stories have been knocking about in my head since my own growing years in Bombay. I hope they entertain you too :)

AWAKENED is the first full length I've read by this Author. I became a fan when reading a shorter work, so I was not surprised to find that Laxmi Hariharan is truly a gifted writer! I was drawn in immediately into the story, and became quickly invested in the character of Ruby with her inner battle to conquer the fears and negativity that rises in seeing what has happened to her city. Plus her attempts of overcoming the rejection from her parent, all bundled into a resolution and strength to succeed on her own!

The story is set in the fascinating dystopian world of Bombay, the description, which I had a taste of in a previous work of Ms. Hariharan's was simply incredible! The detailing of the crumbling city that still showed the sparkle of its former glory of glamour was lush and so keen, I felt as if I could see, taste, smell what Ruby could see, taste and smell!

The story follows Ruby after healing from an incident searching for her best friend Pankaj who is kidnapped. Ruby is assisted by the very handsome Vikram who ignites feelings within Ruby that surprises her. They both race against time as an evil posed by Dr. Braganza is revealed and from there the story amps up three-fold, as they seek to stop the Dr. and save both Pankaj and her city!

Well written, lush descriptions and fast paced flowing plot, The Many Lives of Ruby Iyer brings a fresh voice to the dystopian genre!
I fully recommend to those who enjoy action and adventure with a touch of suspense!

Appropriate for all ages, I look forward to reading the next! I count this as a must read!

In THE MANY LIVES OF RUBY IYER, author Laxmi Hariharan sucked me into her tale of a badass girl, a sexy rogue cop, and a crumbling city from the very first word. And boy, am I glad I took a little time away from my writing to get lost in Ruby’s world because the adventure was exciting and thrilling and read like an action-packed Bollywood film that all of us would stand in line for and pay good money to see.

But I must say, just as enthralling as the action and adventure, the characters and the danger, is Ms. Hariharan’s writing; her ability to make you touch and taste, smell and hear her city is spellbinding. I found myself closing my eyes and letting her descriptions really get into my bones, deep down and dirty, and felt Bombay, that grimy, throbbing, smelly, loud city of never-ending energy right along with her. It’s escapist to the extreme and even if you’re not a fan of YA or dystopia, you should read RUBY IYER just to lose yourself in Hariharan’s descriptions.

The world created by Ms. Hariharan is fast-paced, full of righteous anger, and so well-written, you close the book only wanting more. More Ruby, more Vikram – please, Laxmi! more Vikram – and more of those delicious, delectable descriptions of a city on the verge of collapse and a girl on the verge of greatness.

Rock on with your bad self, Laxmi, and keep writing because I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Laxmi has a very unique style of writing- and takes on a double-challenge by writing in the first person and the present tense. This is by far one of the more difficult approaches for a writer to use. She does it very well. This is one of her earlier works, where there is more emphasis on action than on character. This is not meant to detract from a great story that is part of a larger series and timeline. I like that she creates female characters as the central part of her stories. We need more strong female characters to serve as role models for our young. This is not to overlook Laxmi’s understanding of literary devices, either. The story opens with Ruby facing imminent death, and eventually circles all the way back to a mirror of this scene, at the end, with an epic payoff—but I don’t want to give anything away. This is a fast-paced read that draws on the historical, mystical and fantastical. It’s about friendship, destiny and identity- and how they all weave together to create our lives.

From chapter 1, we are thrown inside middle of the action, you have to stay focus all the time or you will have to read the previous page again ;)
Ruby is a normal (rather) girl, is involved in something much bigger than she thought at first. Then she have to deal with kidnapping, guns, knowledge of her origins and the most important emotions, especially love
Characters have very different personalities, different way of dealing with life :)

Generally, the book has smooth action, lots of twists.

In a freak accident, Ruby receives an electrical shock that is compared to a lightening strike. On her back and shoulder is a design in her skin of tree and its branches.

Ruby lives in Bombay and has not had contact with either parent. Her Mother left her; Ruby comes to realize that her very own Mother does remember that Ruby is her daughter BUT more importantly, her Mother has become a terrorist with a following of young people. Her goal is to kill anyone who tries to stop her from controlling the city and eventually the world.

Awakened is jam packed full of action and drama and needs to be placed on a TBR list. I enjoyed reading it so much

It took me a little while to warm up to the story but something clicked and I found myself deep in to the story. It flows very well and the plot is very good. It kept me guessing and the ending surprised me a bit.
It's a really good apocalyptic vision and the lengths Ruby's mother would have gone to had she taken out other major world cities as well as Bombay would have been one heck of a tale.
Laxmi Hariharan's characters are rich and full of interesting backgrounds.
It was nice to be able to read a book with out predicting which character does what or the ending plot.
I would definitely recommend this to my friends and family. It's a very interesting insight into life in Bombay.
I really look forward to reading more of Laxmi Hariharan's books in the future.
Prepare to find it difficult to put this book down whilst you find out how things turn out.

So many twists and surprises in an action- packed yet deeply emotional story about a young woman caught up in a stream of life that may or may not be something fated...
In an internal struggle against a childhood survived under a seemingly uncaring yet particularly domineering mother, the life of the protagonist is a roller coaster ride between the emotional charge of trying to be independent yet wishing to be able to believe in (and maybe to trust, to love) someone, at least one person. Up to the last page the surprises are hard to second guess, and keep the reader right on the edge.
