Editorial Reviews

From the Author

The Awakening serves as the first book in the Evaran Chronicle series. This book introduces the namesake of the series, along with the two main characters. It is my debut novel and while classified as a short novel (46k), the intent is for following books in the series to be longer (80k+).

The focus of the series is to explore time, space, parallel worlds, what-if scenarios, and other places. The setting is inspired from the likes of Marvel, D&D, Dr. Who, Star Trek, and various other science fiction cosmologies. It is something I have been building for a long time. Along with that were many storyline ideas I jotted down during that time, which will now be realized in this series. The genres covered will range from alternative history to space opera, but time travel and adventure will always be at the heart of it. Writing this book was a labor of love for me and a chance to get out these ideas.

I love science, and am an avid reader of it. I will always strive to include it where I can amongst the more fantastical elements that I need to extrapolate on (ex. time rifts). Being from the tech world, there is also a heavy tech element to it. This ties into the theme of knowledge is power. I also love horror, so will strive to add elements of that as well. The Awakening has elements of all the above. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Although books in the series are sequential, they can be read stand-alone. The suggested reading order is:

The Arrival - The Evaran Chronicles Prequel
The Awakening - Book 1 of the Evaran Chronicles
The Fredorian Destiny - Book 2 of the Evaran Chronicles
The Purification - Book 3 of the Evaran Chronicles

About the Author

I have lived all over the world as a military brat. It gave me an interesting perspective of the world growing up. I currently reside in Columbus , Ohio and work in the information technology field during the day. My free time is dedicated to reading, writing, gaming, walking, learning, and watching cool series! I had a setting I had been kicking around in my head for the last twenty years or so. It wasn't until the last ten that it really began to solidify. My journey into writing began in 2013, and since then, I have worked feverishly on translating my world to the written word.

When I saw The Awakening on NetGalley, it didn’t jump out at me. I didn’t even request it the first time I saw it. I eventually did, and this is a fun SciFi adventure.

The story is not without its flaws, though. The dialog seemed stilted, and the “flow” of the story wasn’t as smooth as I’ve come to expect from SciFi adventures. Also, there was a lot of repetition in the story, including many “I” statements that are so common in first-person narratives. Finally, much of the action was a result of coincidence, and Evaran solved problems with some doo-dad or gizmo that exactly resolved the situation.

I’d be interested in checking out the sequel, The Fredorian Destiny, to see what the author will do with the series. Over all, I’d rate this story 3.5 stars.

Started out with a great premise, alien kidnaps, and then degenerated into a bit of a mess, I usually stop reading a book when the author starts talking about vampires or werewolves, and Adair Hart did, for no apparent reason that I can see, except maybe for some future storyline. The characters were a bit 2 dimensional and very bland, fine for young teenagers maybe, the violence is all aimed at or by aliens, so not too bad.

I received this book for free in exchange for a truthful review. This is the first free book i have ever given 5 stars and must say that every page kept my attention . Slam bang from start to finish. Complaints include being too short and a little rushed, but otherwise it was a good story (Dr Who on steroids ). I have already purchased book 2.

Time, not space, is the final frontier because it is fluid. Like a pebble in a pond, any change causes ripples. Once our eyes and minds are opened, unimaginable things become reality. Fairy tales and ghost stories had to come from somewhere. Come, let us explore the possibilities. - Evaran

The Awakening is a very imaginative exciting sci-fi book that I could not stop reading once I started. A handful of people are abducted by aliens but are in a deep sleep and think they are living their lives as normal, kinda Matrix-like. The ship they are one is damaged and someone comes to tell them the truth to prepare them for the awakening to the real world. The main characters are Emily and her uncle Dr Snowden. They meet others people onboard but also other species that have been abducted. The band battles a failing ship, crazy creatures, then bad guys (of course!). The guy who is trying to save them is well known and feared in the galaxies as one not to mess with but it doesn't stop some hard core mercenaries coming to attack. The book is fast paced, characters well developed, very imaginative, creative, has lots of surprises, and plot well planned. I enjoyed this book completely and look forward to more from this author. I reviewed this book for NetGalley.

I am only a moderate fan of this genre, but found this book a great read. While the author occasionally goes into more detail about the characters than I feel is needed, the characters are well developed and evolve as the story moves. They are understandable and relatable. The setting - the ship - is clearly described and I could easily envision the characters as they moved through it, with all the pitfalls they found along the way. The beginning leads the reader in one direction, then the story changes as what is happening is revealed. It is interesting and I found it compelling. I did find it a little too short, simply because I wanted to know more - I wanted more background on Earth and more what happens next. I have already purchased the next book in the series, as I want to continue with this story. Hart is a thoughtful writer with an interesting story to tell.

Anybody else noticing the lack of quality kindle reads at reasonable prices on Bookbub or Kindle First? If so, you might want to consider these worthy reads you might have missed that won't set you back but a buck (not bad when you consider you'd pay around $100 to purchase all the print versions separately). Check out my recent reviews for about a nine books or so running the gamut from traditional detective to time travel, England historical mystery to metaphysical and more. There's still some fine reads that can be had for a small sum and hopefully these suggestions will get you started. Happy reading!
