This novel helps to renew the hope we have for each other, when one person becomes enlightened to the plights of people other than his class. This is a timeless tale that can deeply touch us today. After reading this novel I began to search out more books by this author, he really touched my heart and made me feel that there is hope out there if everyone could just be awakened.

I compared the first sentences of this translation with other translations that Amazon sells. The first paragraph of this one is spectacularly dense compared to the Oxford Classics version, also sold by Amazon.

Do yourself a favour, read a sentence or two in a couple of different translations. You'll know in an instant which one you want to buy. Not all Tolstoy is good Tolstoy.

After l finished War and Peace, l tried a couple other books by different auhors and l just craved the wording of Tolstoy. As soon as l read the first few lines of this book, l was comforted. The storyline's moral struggle was enough to make me set the book down for a bit and lose myself in my own thoughts of morals. I thouroughly enjoyed the characters and would recommend this read.

How can I rate Tolstoy? It is as wonderful and silly as Teffi’s story about how, as a little girl, she went to Tolstoy’s house in Moscow to ask him to change War and Peace so that Prince Andrei would not die, and then lost her nerve. Resurrection contains some of the best descriptions of remorse for something that cannot be undone in all literature. As a former lawyer, I was captivated by the trial scenes, where Tolstoy caught the attitudes of the judges and jurors better than almost everyone I have read. His descriptions of Russian legal process, so different from our own but so similar in its reliance on procedure and indifference to outcome, read as if written yesterday. The indifference of the legal process complements the indifference of Nekhludoff, who seduced Maklova and then paid her, turning a naïve young woman into a prostitute. The mystery is whether anyone can be redeemed by another person or even by God.

Wrestled the essential questions of middle class angst, sexual inequality and biology-v-environment. Insightful and tight writing. Some interpretations are more raw than others. Some flat-out avoid some fine points the writer made. I suggest reading several translated versions unless you are blessed enough to read it in the original Russian.

Well written for the most part, just not as well or profoundly as Anna Karinina. The ending wasn't as interesting or resolve things as satisfyingly as I would have liked. I loved the exploration of living sincerely.
