Review
Thought provoking with thematic moral undertones,Brooks has created astute, honest, and most notably, believablecharacters that quickly materialize in the mind and bring an undeniablesense of authenticity to her tale that will leave many of her readersreflecting upon the fettered boundaries of forbidden romance in bygonetimes. - Book Viral
A story about deep love and also about the deep cruelty one person can inflict on another. The story begins in Larissa Greece and continues in Germany which is Eva's home. The settings are so realistic and vivid. I found myself "right there" in the story. -- Jenny Channdelier -
Brooks writes her characters beautifully and the love between Eva and Zoe is palpable. The setting adds excitement and interest, but there's more going on here than 1940s Europe. Poetic, lovely and highly recommended. -- Sam G - Amazon.com

About the author

Mary lives in Australia and have been writing for fifty years starting off with short stories of the antics of the neighborhood misfits. She's written short fiction stories for various Australian and US magazines and some non-fiction articles. It wasn't until 2000 she realized she wanted to delve into World War II and women of the resistance. Her first full length novel was published in 2001.
Mary has won multiple awards for her historical fiction, romance, and urban fantasy novels. One of the highlights of her life was when her debut novel, "In the Blood of the Greeks," and its accompanying non-fiction volume, "In the Blood of the Greeks: The Illustrated Companion," were selected by the Jewish Museum of Greece for its collection on the Holocaust in Greece during World War II.

The series follows the relationship between Eva and Zoe, from their first meeting during World War II on opposite sides of the conflict, their falling in love, and the various trials and tribulations that life throws at them in the decades after the war. These two have become world travelers and have lived in Greece, Australia, Greece again, and then Germany. Each move and new country has its share of new surprises and many times challenges as old memories or secrets are stirred up. In "Awakenings", the two have to deal with memories of the conflict that ultimately brought them together. There are also some not so pleasant secrets about Eva's family that await to be uncovered in Germany.
There wasn't anything not to love about this next installment. The story, and journey, with these two continued to flow as if I had never left them from the last book. I enjoyed so much having the two characters, Dr. Nikas-Lambros and Theresa Mitsos, play such a role of support here. The conflicts that arose for the two made for such an interesting read and the historical references are always something that keep me glued to the story. Once again - well done.
When the ladies get back from Europe, Zoe decides that she wants a child. Since they are a lesbian couple, this is difficult, since they don't want a man to touch them. Finally, one of their gay friends agrees to impregnate Zoe. Once the child comes, Eva and Zoe have to get "married". If they don't ,Zoe will be considered an unfit mother and the child will be taken away. So, they get "married" to two gay guys who are a couple but have to get married because one of them is a school principle who would get fired if it came out that he was gay.
The book is good in that the plot somewhat accurately describes what life was like in the late 1940's early 1950's. Some of the characters and the plot are a little wooden . Overall, this does not mar the generally good book.
