Learning and laughs. This educational and entertaining video teaches the concepts of positive and negative reinforcement, differential reinforcement, stimulus control, three term contingency (discriminative stimulus, response, reinforcer), shaping (reinforcement of successive approximations), fading, chaining (response chains), and schedules of reinforcement (examples of FR 5, VR5, DRL, DRH). Viewers will laugh and learn throughout as the concepts are taught in a humorous "Mr. Science" fashion. Segments show a somewhat younger Stephen Ray Flora demonstrating concepts. With clear descriptions, other segments have close-ups of rats responding clearly under stimulus and schedule control. The analogy between natural selection and operant selection is emphasized. The segment of "Domino" the rat being shaped to dunk a basketball (ping pong ball) clearly demonstrates the process involved in shaping and provides an important lesson of how trainer's behaviors are often shaped by the subject's behavior as much as the trainers shape the subject's behavior. Likewise, in a fun and touching process, viewers will see the behavior of a dog (Tosh) gradually and systematically, but with errors, come under stimulus control as Tosh learns to jump over, or go under, a hurdle depending on hearing the verbal command (functioning as a discriminative stimulus) of either "over" or "under." Although most of the concepts are shown using rats or with dog training, the video has proven to be a useful educational tool for those training in applied behavior analysis. This video was originally made as an educational VHS tape, but has now been made available on DVD in response to requests.
