Editorial Reviews

Written and directed by Victor Varnado and set to the music of cutting-edge hip-hop artist Farbeon, THE AWKWARD KINGS showcases the talents of four groundbreaking African-American comedians.

Comic Marina Franklin interviews the Awkward Kings, whose ranks include alternative stand-up artists Victor Varnado, Hannibal Buress, Eric André and Baron Vaughn. The film captures their antics on and off the stage through group hang-out sessions, informal interviews and personal vignettes animated by underground comic book artists. While the Kings each have their own wacky style, they all have two things in common: they re all a little weird, and they all challenge our preconceptions of what black comedy is and can be.

Riffing on topics ranging from Shakespeare to science fiction, THE AWKWARD KINGS inject black comedy with a fresh and nerdy new style.

Sure I mixed the sound for The Awkward Comedy Show but that doesn't change the fact that everything mentioned in the other reviews is true. This is a funny, funny show. I've been subjected to this movie several dozen times and I still crack up. Working on the film has also given me the unique ability to attest to the fact that Victor Varnado is indeed a douche bag who despite having made millions off of the film's sale to Comedy Central, still owes me $500.

Where's my money Victor??!!

I caught this when it aired on Comedy Central. These are not your stereotypical black comedians and that makes this stand-up movie stand out! There are 5 comics, each with their own style. My favorites were Victor and Hannibal. Along with the stand-up sets, there are animated shorts and interviews. The movie itself is well made and the comedians had me laughing out loud. This DVD is one I know I can put on every time I have friends over. Recommended!

It's great to see stand up comedians from other ethnicities just be funny rather than stereotypical hacks. Each comic has a style completely different from the one before him. I didn't enjoy the host's sense of humor though but I found every other comedian that she introduced pretty hilarious. The animated autobiographical segue-ways of each comedian are unique and enjoyable despite rarely offering anything deeper about the individual. It seem like another excuse to fill in a "funny" part of their real lives. Before a comedian hits the stage, the other comics on the DVD have these very awkward compliments masquerading as conversation. It's very staged and feels slightly disingenuous. Hannibal doesn't join in on any of these things however. Since then, I have seen Hannibal multiple times at UCB and he is amazing to see live; as are the other comics I assume. Victor if your reading this, you were amazing in HACKS (the movie) and great job on making this DVD.

This Seinfeld-esque comedy performance riffs on the humor of being different than the "norm", be it a nerd, a person of a different sexuality, a person of a different skin color, or a person with a different personality, and shows via humor that we're all the same=humans.

I'd seen and know a few of the comedians featured here, but hadn't heard this material, which is centered around a comedy show the five are performing in and also features animation to go along with their stories. Each comedian has a different style of performing and each are hilarious in their own way. Hosted by Marina Franklin, the comedy flows smoothly from one topic to another, and each touches on race but doesn't make that the focal point of their act. Baron Vaughn was a particular favorite, with his bit on waiting for his AIDS test result (I know, you wouldn't think that would be funny, would you?) or his being "mixed" (you have to see the bit for that to make sense). They talk about family, dating and everyday life and sometimes it's the smallest observations (like Hannibal Buress's grammatical inquiries) that take you by surprise in how hilarious they are.

I also liked that the performers each commented on the other people's style, such as Buress's laidback, almost deadpan way of speaking, that makes his punchlines all the funnier, and way of going about doing comedy, and we got a little insight into how they approach the audience. I go to a lot of comedy shows and have learned that you can't force laughter, and in this DVD your face will probably hurt, like mine did, from laughing so hard. Whether you've heard them before or not, this is an excellent and extremely funny DVD. I wish all comedy shows were as humorous.

The Awkward Comedy show is a funny, funny movie. If you love standup, you'll love it. If you hate standup, you will also love it. The material is smart, funny, and wonderfully odd at times, and although the movie doesn't hit you over the head with any message, it's an oddly empowering portrait of five unique comics who defy expectations of what it means to be a "black comic" in America.

P.S. Must remember to actually watch the movie sometime.
