Ordered a different MP3 boombox at a lower price point ($60) but it arrived damaged. After reading reviews I ponied up for the $20 upgrade to something a bit easier to work and sturdier.
BUILD QUALITY: The Phillips is definitely heavier and sturdier than the no-name and Pyle branded knockoffs. However this is for a kid who will definitely test this boombox. I don’t expect the radio antenna will last very long. The battery compartment hatch is also a little on the thin side. The plastic guards on each side of the boombox that protect the ‘subwoofers’ are also a bit thin and flexible. The handle, knobs, screen and CD hatch are all excellent and will withstand some abuse.
SOUND: Despite the subwoofers, don’t expect a lot of bass. The sound is OK and there are several preset EQ settings. JAZZ sounded the best to me even with rock and Christmas music. The rest are pretty awful. Both subwoofers move, but didn’t feel much bass even with ear right next to the cone. For some reason more sound seemed to be coming from the right sub than the left.
LIGHT SHOW: As mentioned in other reviews, the light show is pretty dull, not reactive to the music at all but, the colors are bright and there is a good variety (green, purple, red, two blues, mixed). Unlike the off-brand boxes there is a “lights off” feature so you can disable. Unfortunately it is the LAST setting of 8 so you have to cycle through all of them to get to the lights off setting.
The control for the EQ and the lights is the same button, so each change of the LIGHTS requires a long press. If you accidentally short press, it changes the EQ which is annoying. So for a little kid it is difficult to change the lights easily without changing the sound. They should have swapped functions and make it harder to change the EQ.
On the remote, the controls for light and EQ are separate.
BLUETOOTH: Paired quite easily with my iPhone and I did not need to use the pair button at all. I was able to walk all over the house without the Bluetooth disconnecting. Sound is good and I could pause, advance, etc. on both my phone and the boombox, or use the remote.
SD CARD: This boombox will take an SD card, a USB stick, or a 1/8” line in connection. The SD card uses the old-school large SD cards so if you have a micro SD card you will need an adapter.
CD: I did not want or need a CD player, I specifically wanted an MP3 boombox. But, this has a sturdy CD player up top and will play CD-R’s.
RADIO: Again, I would have appreciated a simple MP3 boombox with good build quality and don’t need the radio. But for trips this function might come in handy when there is no wi-fi. Probably will get more use from the SD card and MP3.
BATTERIES: This unit comes with NO batteries. You’ll need 2 AAA for the remote. NOT included. And 8 big D batteries to operate without the wall plug.
Wall plug is the normal two-prong grounded type and not the weird USB type on some of the knockoffs.
Overall, this unit has sound you’d probably expect from a $40-50 product. The light show is fine, the build quality is decent and I feel it will last longer than the knockoffs. Did not need the CD or radio features. If you spend $80 on this product you’re basically trading up for brand name and build quality only. The sound, light show and features are roughly the same as the cheaper knockoffs. Just keep in mind with the SD card/USB stick and batteries you’ll be spending another $20 minimum for portability, to use the remote and to play MP3’s.
