Top Customer Reviews
1.) The strong, adjustable bars that connect the rack to the upper seatstays have to be bent if your bike has a short rear end/chainstays, and they are quite difficult to bend evenly.
2.) The reflector mount, in contrast to rest of this burly rack, is a dinky afterthought that will take ordinary reflectors--but most screw-on taillights use a different mounting system that doesn't work with this. The only exception I've found is the Serfas Stop Sign Taillight which you can also find on Amazon.
If you intend to mount this, or any other aluminum accessory, to a steel frame then be aware that there could be accelerated rusting (oxidation) wherever the aluminum touches steel. This is due to the electrochemical properties of steel and aluminum. My solution has been to install galvanized steel washers between the aluminum rack mount points and the screw holes on my bike frame. That way the washers, rather than the frame, will take the contact oxidation and can be easily replaced.
The Journey has thick, strong tubes and beefy welds that inspire confidence. The shape and tube arragement are strong, and perfect if you're going to mount panniers. I really like the fully adjustable heavy duty front brackets that mount to the frame near the rear brakes. These are much stronger and more confidence inspiring than the flimsy flexible silver metal strips that come with 80% of bike racks.
This rack was super easy to install, fit perfectly level and true without any hassle. I have since purchased Axiom Lasalle DLX Pannier Set (Black and Grey) Pannier Bags, and they mount perfectly on the rack. I had not been familiar with the Axiom brand before I bought these products, but they are bulletproof and inspire confidence, while looking good. Recommended!!
It's size on my 59cm 700c bike was spot on. Installation was easy and strait forward.
Concerning the fit, it sits crooked!
I could never get it aligned with the bicycle; it repeatably would sit maybe 5deg off the long axis of my bike. I tried the axiom journey on another bicycle with the same result, while another bicycle rack aligned up nicely with my frame. I can only assume that someone at the rack factory didn't care about their job that day.
Over the last few years it's been thrown around commuting, survived a half dozen or so flights, weeks of loaded touring at a time, and has served as a second seat for friends on the way home from the pub. 150lb weight limit? Who knows, but it never broke.
What's finally doing it in is the inherent softness of aluminum. The top rails, as well as some of those in contact with my panniers/ulock have worn through in a number of places! Not that I mind too much, it still supports my pannier and ulock well enough.
I think that for the city, it's adequate.
