I found myself pleasantly surprised to see the spiraling road on how Ayana ended up going back to Indianapolis and ended up landing in a predicament that I didn't see coming. The author writes in a semi- technical form. I would like to think that I have a very high vocabulary, but Peter Mack brings it with words leaving me astonished. His skills are evident when he paints vivid scenes of the craziness that happens in this book and engraves them into my mind. I thought that Stash and Dimp would have a more prominent role in this story but they were just stepping stones to help her get to where she was going. It was nice to hear that they were ok after the mysterious mad dash they had to make after Ayana killed her boyfriend. I know this book was called Ayana The Return, but my overall favorite character was Prada. She was such a dynamic individual and I feel that her character made this story. In the beginning the way she was introduced had me feeling like she was just a high-dollar escort but she was so much more complex than that and my mouth literally hit the floor when I found out who she REALLY was. I don't want to ruin the surprise for other readers, because it was a big one, but I will say that most readers will be just as shocked and baffled as I was. In the beginning, I truly felt for Reverend Mathias Lovejoy. Him losing his wife, his church and then his health had me worried that maybe he wouldn't pull through. But the mere sight of Ayana brought him back to his happy place and she was just the thing that he needed to be restored again. The height of the book occurred when Ayana and Prada worked together to use their own strengths to mis-guide Briggs and Whitey. It didn't take much to turn Whitey and Briggs against each other and the end left me awestruck. Whitey and Briggs got exactly what they deserved. This book was very refreshing to read because the Author, Peter Mack is very skilled in his vocabulary rich with purposeful dialect. The only reason I am not giving this book a perfect five stars is because I felt that the end of this story, perhaps the most important part was under worked and a bit rushed. It is obvious that Peter took great time in working on each detail and characters of this book, however the end left me craving more and filled with questions. I am aware what happened and thought it all ended properly: Mathias made it to his rightful place back preaching at his church, Briggs and Whitey took care of themselves (with a little help from Prada and Ayana) But I wanted to know more...
What did Briggs do, say or think after he went to jail? Did Whitey really die? And most importantly, did Mathias and Ayana finally get married after all this occurred? And what did Prada do with the money that Briggs stole from Whitey and the church? I just wish that as much detail that was spent building the characters was also used during the ending when all the drama went down. Overall though, this book was amazing and was a reminder that just because folks frequent the church doesn't always mean that they are washed of all sins. So much was going on with the reverend, the deacon, etc. I appreciate the fact that this author didn't hold back any punches when discussing issues that go down all the time amongst the church people. Thanks for keeping it real!!
I didn't want it to end, I wanted more, how much more? I don't know. It is the kind of book that will consume your brain for days.
Peter Mack keep writing...readers keep on reading.
I absolutely loved Ayana and I am going to go back and read up on her story to totally understand her and Reverend Lovejoy and what makes their relationship so special. Ayana is a woman that knows her worth, as well as her strength, and she uses them to combat the drama and conflict in the story. Prada’s character is a very special blend of “unique.” She is what most would call a designer hoe, and I use that word with love because of how I perceive her character’s need for her “womanhood” to be accepted, loving all things feminine. But she has a very special “treat” that is revealed and will leave you speechless. When these two women come to together there is nothing and no one they can’t conquer. This is evident when they choose to right the wrongs done by Briggs and Reverend Lovejoy’s brother, Whitey. What brings them even closer is the realization that it’s a very small world and the people that are dear to them are dear to the other as well.
Although I enjoyed this story by Peter Mack and thus the four stars, I felt it was a little bit rushed towards the end. Some questions were left unanswered. From reading previous works of Mr. Mack’s, I know he takes an enormous amount of time and pride developing his characters as well as his story plot. There is so much more to this story that is not revealed in the lines of this review. Pick up your copy of Ayana: The Return and get caught up in the latest Mack Heat.
