Az is one of the archangels of God - Michael, Gabriel, Lucifer, and Az. But he's the only one who doesn't have a job, a position. Michael is the Protector Warrior, Gabriel is the Messenger, Lucifer is the Day Star, and Az is a nobody. So he tries very hard to become someone and finally succeeds when God asks the archangels to get the clay to create Man. The others fail, but Az manages to appease Mother Earth and so retrieves the clay from which Man was made.
So now, he thinks of himself as the The Angel of Life. How wrong could he have been! Almost immediately, Cain murder's Abel and Az has to take his first soul. He is shocked at the brutality of it all and his thoughts and ideas about this heavenly creation collapse. He also realizes that his brother, Lucifer, is his nemesis and that his responsibility as the savior of Man's soul means that he's actually The Angel of Death.
As Az tries to defeat Lucifer, he finds himself becoming more and more like Lucifer. His anger and disdain for Man reach a point where he begins to neglect his responsibilities until he meets a little girl who shows him the light once more. But now, Lucifer has leverage over him and will stop at nothing, including using the girl, to cause Az's demise.
