Product Description
A Versatile Microphone for Cameras and Video
With the SMX-30 you’ve always got the right microphone for the job. That’s because it is both a stereo microphone and a mono-shotgun microphone, allowing you to switch between the two on the fly. Plus with other great features like gain control, auto-on, a low cut filter, and of course awesome sound quality, the SMX-30 is sure to be a microphone you’ll always want to keep in your gear bag.
It's a Stereo Microphone
Use the stereo mode to capture rich, immersive audio that enhances the scene you're shooting. Great for nature scenes, musical performances, or any kind of action video.
And it's a Mono Shotgun Microphone
Mono mode uses a supercardioid shotgun microphone to really focus in on your sound source. Perfect for picking up dialogue in vlog style videos, or for "run and gun" interview situations.

I haven't tried the furry windshield outdoors yet, but it definitely was not easy to put on. It's designed to fit over the foam cover so there's a lot of resistance when you try to slip it on. If it works like it should then I can't really complain because it's not like I'd be putting it on and removing it every 5 minutes while out in the field :-P
If you're looking for a serious on-camera mic don't even bother looking at Azden's competition. The price point is unbeatable for a combined Stereo/Mono shotgun mic and you'll get studio quality audio on par with stand-alone mics like the Blue Yeti. I'll update this review as I continue to use it, but it's already set the standard at a level few other devices can reach :-)
Ok so I am one of those people who got an expensive camera and now thinks they're a super photographer, hehehehe!
But when it came to video and audio, I think every camera in the world has crappy microphones.
So, I figure, if you know enough about taking video to know you need a better microphone, but you don't want to spend the money or have the complications of a shotgun mic on a boom pole close to the subject, you probably ended up here, looking at this mic.
So my advice is, YES, get it!
Personally, I have found the shotgun part to be great, and that's what I use most often. But there are some situations where a stereo mic is better. Usually when I'm just pretending to be Steven Spielberg while videoing my kids playing around the house, and need a little Left to Right stereo imaging.
As with most mics like this, you will have to experiment with the combination of the dB boost, neutral or the pad, and how it compares to the pre-amps in your camera.
Switching this mic to the BOOST and turning DOWN the on-camera pre-amps in MY camera seems to work well. I also have a small field recorder with better pre-amps I could use, if I ever got the motivation.
So just experiment. Maybe your camera has decent pre-amps, so you should leave the boost switch on the mic in neutral.
The only thing I'd change is to design it with a better 'shock mount', but let's be real: I'm using a microphone that is still attached to my camera. If I really cared about clean audio, I would hook this up to a boom pole.. yes, I would use this same mic on a pole, connected to a field audio recorder. But again, I'm usually too lazy for that.
Dang, sorry for the long review! Bottom line is this mic IS great, especially for the price. If you are hear looking for this type of mic, then YES, I definitely recommend it.
If you are trying to decide on this type of mic vs. a lavalier mic vs. a shotgun mic on a boom pole, then you are probably a big hobbyist or you already make your own semi-professional videos. In that case, you already know the answer: Get a boom pole or lav mics! :)
But yes, this is a great mic. And yes, it is WORTH IT to get this -30 version which has Stereo and Mono! It's worth the extra price.
Have fun!
It is expensive, but for me worth the investment.
