Do people who criticize human sacrifice in Aztec culture understand that warriors were usually captured in battle (not cut down mercilessly like in the fields of Europe) and that being sacrificed was considered an honor? Was it a wonderful practice? Was Romans feeding Christians to Lions wonderful? Yet Roman history has captured imaginations around the world. Why? Because you can't take one practice and say that this was the whole culture. There was much more to Aztec culture than human sacrifice. The colonizers would have us believe that human sacrifice was all that was happening in Aztec culture to justify their destruction and death of it and using the people as a labor force who have continued to live in poverty to this day. My genes are Aztec and growing up I was made to feel ashamed by the stories of the colonizers. Yet when the colonizers tore through the Americas using the doctorine of discovery and "manifest destiny" they left out that there were an estimated 100 million of us already here. Perhaps this book shows us other aspects of Aztec culture because the world usually only gets the perspective of the colonizers who were known for cutting off the hands of the indigenous when they could not bring them more gold.
