I wanted to try moxibustion and so I bought the sticks and the B-11A Moxa Holder/ Extinguisher, New Style.
I found this product effective and quality made chrome plated. It has a nice weight to it and is balanced well. I tried tipping it over by flicking my finger lightly off the edge of the ash tray and could not.
I used it for the Huasun Smokeless Moxa Rolls and it fit easily into the opening and extinguished it in no time flat. The ash tray around the holder/extinguisher is a nice touch.
The ash tray is approximately 2 3/4” wide and 1/2” deep. The holder has an opening of approximately 3/4” wide and is 1 1/4” deep.
If you are looking for a simple, effective and classy moxa holder/extinguisher, this perfectly fits the bill. It is substantial, quality chromed and perfectly holds a moxa stick. One can place the lit moxa either standing vertically in the holder, or horizontally across it. Of course, if you use it horizontally, the moxa will extend beyond the ash tray. I use it vertically and, although there are no air holes for intake, the holder allows just enough space to allow air to be drawn in the bottom. Thus, the stick stays lit while vertical. Putting the lit end of the moxa down in the holder extinguishes the moxa quickly, without producing more smoke. Ashes fall completely into the catch tray. The holder looks like a simple but quality candle holder and probably can be used for that, with the right size candle. I also have the more Asian-style wooden moxa box, but prefer this one for its simplicity, one piece classy looking holder/extinguisher. It does not get uncomfortably (or dangerously) hot.
I love this type of moxa extinguisher. Some do not have the ring around the snuffing section. The ring is very convenient to help to catch any ash if you choose to try and collect it rather than blowing it off, plus it gives it added stability so it's less likely to tip over. The cuts into the center of the holder allow a moxa stick to be balanced across it horizontally, which is useful. The moxa sticks tend to fit nicely and snug, although not too tightly, into the center. You do not need to "force" the moxa stick in; just drop it into the snuffer section and it takes care of itself. This was the type used in my training program for acupuncture, and I can see why they chose it. There were no concerns with manufacturing or with the seller or delivery. Overall, a simple, functional, solid product.
I received the B-11A moxa holder and it was scratched along the top where the moxa would sit. The metal was chipping off around the scratches. The holder was made cheap and I could tell when I looked into the extinguisher where the two screws holding the parts together were protruding. If one was to put a moxa stick into the extinguisher it would be broken. I contacted the company to see if I could get the holder replaced and I haven't heard back from them.
