First, the authors share that many years ago their investment strategy was to contribute to 401k accounts (and invest in low-cost stock mutual funds in their 401ks), and also invest in real estate in their home state of Utah. But then they determined this was not an optimal way to invest. I don’t understand this since the best two performing asset classes of the last 30 years have been stocks and real estate (especially investment real estate in Utah). These two asset classes have generated 10%+ annual returns over the last 30 years.
Second, the book’s target audience seems to be middle-class retirees (for example, they share an example of a retired couple that needs $4,000/month of retirement income), and yet they worry that retirees will have one-third of more of their retirement income hit by an “avalanche” of taxes. I don’t understand this concern. For example, a married couple that makes $48,000 per year of retirement income (half from social security and half from IRA distributions) would only pay about 5% of that in federal taxes. This is because the first $25K is not taxed (due to the standard deduction) and the next $20K is only taxed at a 10% rate. So, I think their tax planning advice, especially for middle-income retirees, is misguided.
And third, they express paying high fees for investment management is a big problem, and I agree with that, but that’s really an industry wide problem for most financial advisors. Plus, section 5 of their firm’s ADV 2 document (available on the SEC website) suggests that their firm’s fees are also high and in line with the industry average.
I did find the book to contain some good advice, but most of the advice is misguided in my opinion.
The authors know what they are talking about.
