I had been staying at home too much. Parking close to stuff and walking feel like a hassle. I was considering a bike too, but I need to figure out locks and car racks. A board, on the other hand, I can just hide in my trunk and go explore. I watched a lot of Casey Neistat vlogs, and he's always going back to the Boosted longboard. Well, I can't stomach the price. I'd be too embarrassed telling people what I paid, and since they're so popular everyone will know. They also make a loud UFO whir from their belt that I don't really like.
After way too many hours of research I settled on this Backfire G2S. It's nearly silent - no belt, it just sounds like a regular longboard. And for the price I might get a second one for my friend to join me, and still pay less than one Boosted board.
I went about 12-13 miles, climbed over about 300ft (Golden Gate Park) + 100ft (Sutro Baths cliffs) elevation change. I mostly stuck to Eco mode because the remote lets you switch as you ride, and Sport isn't that useful except on occasion - Eco has plenty of acceleration. I'll try sport more often when I get better at it, it's pretty fast.
You can see the rough road in the pictures. My skateboard would throw me off going over that, yet the backfire powers over it pretty easy. That's part of why I chose it - the bigger wheels it comes with.
Awesome adventure today.. I'm getting good at longboard now, since I'm not exhausting myself pushing or climbing hills.
2 week update: I ride it every day. I have to be at a few hundred miles now. I've discovered so many places I never would have never bothered to Uber to. I rode with groups of boosted and evolve boards a couple times, and mostly keep up with them fine. Why aren't these more popular? Love it.
Before I go any further, first let me disclose the following: Amazon handled two previous electric longboard returns I requested (due to manufacturer defects) with exemplary customer service and without hesitation. I have never encountered any problems regarding returns I’ve made through Amazon...at least not until this utterly humiliating experience that has caused me deep personal distress. The experience I’m presently enduring (as it remains unresolved because both Amazon and the seller refuse to honor a return. It remains unresolved even after I’ve spoken with 5 different Amazon representatives-3 of which had to get help from 3 other Amazon representatives in supervisory roles—and it remains unresolved even after I was forced, by an Amazon representative to do the awkward and uncomfortable work of personally emailing the seller directly to request a return/fulfillment of their warranty guarantee. This horrendous experience began to unravel the day I drove all the way to the UPS store in a snow storm (I live in Lake Tahoe) planning to ship the device back to Amazon as I’ve done many many times before, not anticipating to encounter any problems at all. I set the packaged device in the shipment area while the currier printed out my return label, then as I was just about to walk out the door, the currier caught me just in time and informed me that there was an unpaid postage fee and the item would not be shipped unless I paid it. Again, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of shipping fee for an Amazon product. I was under the impression that all “prime” products are free of shipping fees, It’s pretty much synonymous with the Amazon brand. I spent the following hour in the busy, noisy post office trying to get help from an amazon representative via the the chat support option. Most of that hour was spent just staring at my phone waiting for a reply from the agent on the other end who must have been assisting other customers because she didn’t seem to remember anything I just told her and it was literally 10 to 15 minutes before she replied to anything I said. It was around this time that I decided I was going to pay for the shipping myself so I waited in the long line of customers sending Christmas gifts, holding my giant, heavy box...I was an obnoxious obstacle amongst the noisy cluster of people with my giant, heavy box. Keep in mind, this was the second time I had to wait in this line, every minute getting later and later for work. When I finally got back to the currier and the postage scale, I was informed that because my shipment was being sent to Virginia and we were in California, and due to the unusually heavy weight of the package, that it was going to cost well over 100 dollars to send it. I almost began to cry, but I sucked it up and walked away with my unsent package. I was still chatting online with the amazon agent, and after I explained the situation as completely and comprehensively as I possibly could, she simply resigned to being able to help me, then transferred me without warning or a good by...or choice at all really to a sales adjustment agent in a completely different department, and that it would need to be over the phone...in the incredibly busy and noisy post office. I had to re-explain the entire situation all over again (a situation I had no understanding of myself) to a different agent who had no notes regarding my conversation with the char support agent. The only thing this agent was able to add toward a resolution was to tell me I have to request a return from the seller directly...that she cannot move forward with the case until “the seller has been given an opportunity to resolve the situation.” At this point I was late for work and thoroughly upset. I asked her why I had to do all this, why is this transaction a complete perversion of the famous Amazon return policy, the one that has earned my trust and loyalty for so many years. She was actually the most helpful agent I had so far regarding this transaction. She asked me if the product was defective, which I confirmed. At that point she told me that she would email the seller herself to initiate the return on their end. She said that after she emails them they will send a reply either agreeing to or refusing the return. This is when she explained the Amazon “A-Z guarantee.” She assured me that due to the return having a “manufacturer defect” status, that Amazon will take the case over completely once the seller refuses to cover the shipping costs and honor a refund and I would promptly be emailed a prepaid return label. This brought me great relief, but I was already at the post office so I asked her if I could get a prepaid return shipping label before leaving the post office so I could avoid another long drive in the snow to drive the device to the ups store a second time. She refused my request stating that the seller has to refuse the return first. Clearly I was disappointed and feeling very betrayed and mislead, however I conceded and agreed to follow her orders because she promised me that if the seller refuses to honor the return and shipping costs that Amazon would take it over and honor a refund/shipping. She said that there will be an investigation into the situation before I get refunded fully, but it will not take more than a week starting the day the receive the device that is shipped using an Amazon covered prepaid shipping label. I confirmed that I had no reservations regarding the investigation as I’ve done nothing fraudulent, dishonest, or otherwise in violation of their returns policy. I drove to work in the snow storm, showed up late and extremely disheartened but I muscled through the evening and tried to not let this effect my performance.
So today I received a robot response email from the seller that stated the device will only be refunded of sent within 7 days of the date it was sold (which I exceeded because Amazon offers a 30 day return policy). There was no indication anywhere in the very short email that this was written by anyone who reviewed my case on a personal basis. I was just not worth even the smallest consideration. Moreover, I was responsible for paying for the postage fees. Moreover, the product must be in brand new condition. Because the defect didn’t present Itself until after I used it several times, depleting the battery (the defect is something to do with the charging process, I have no idea what it is exactly but it’s not fixable without being serviced...something that would void the warrantee). This is where my already horrible situation completely derailed and I became a victim of out-right deception, false advertisement, and violation of my warrantee entitlements.
I opened up a support chat session with an amazon agent. I explained everything all over again and that I have the email from the seller refusing to pay shipping and the rules for receiving a refund from the company that I wasn’t going to be able to fulfill due to the 7 day, brand new condition return policy. This became yet another ridiculously circuitous exchange where she repeatedly told me I was responsible for paying for shipping fees because it was sold through a “third party,” which I painstakingly re-boxed best as possible to the seller’s unconditional demand that all packaging was in new condition along with all the silly wires and parts that also were expected to be in brand-new, unused condition...requirements I’ve never seen before with any Amazon purchases I’ve ever made. I am being ordered to pay over 100 dollars to ship and item I already know isn’t going have any kind of refund honored. I explained to her what the agent told me on the phone, I explained it very concisely, providing exact quotes and every possible detail that could be extracted. She told me that she will follow up with her manager to have the agent who I spoke with reprimanded! I repeat, this agent told me that I was going to get absolutely no help, and that Amazon will
Not be covering the shipping costs for the return but that she will make sure that the Agent who explained the “a to z guarantee” to me will get in trouble for ever offering me help. This is when I began to actually sob and write this review. In case I confused you let me clarify: the only resolution I am being offered after being sold a defective device is the following: the agent that guaranteed me Amazon was going to resolve this return for me is going to get reprimanded for the promise she made me which was that Amazon would take the case over in lieu of the sellers’ cowardly refusal to stand by their faulty product, their refusal even to cover the incredibly ridiculously expensive shipping fees to get the frivolous process started, a process that we all already will yield absolutely no resolution.
This has left me feeling humiliated and utterly betrayed. I derive no pleasure from denigrating others nor am I am angry person who feels entitled to any handouts exceptions. I am going to escalate this to the next level here momentarily and hopefully I can update this review or delete it outright. I have little hope for a positive or acceptable resolution and honestly I feel so violated and abused at this point that there is little anyone can do or offer that will justify the absurdity I’ve been subjected to here. Just please, please take my advice and avoid buying ANYTHING from this seller at all costs.
My review of the product:
The light that comes with it is complete rubbish. I had to remove the front trucks to attach the metal post that seats the light...but then the light wouldn’t snap into it despite my tireless effort. When I finally managed to get it to clip in, the bloody thing fell off during my very first ride and I lost it completely...leaving me with this ugly, useless vestige that is now nothing more than a dangerous protrusion of metal that sits dubiously at the front of my board. I’m certain one day it will be the end if me as it will impale or lacerate my face, groin, or other vital...unpaddable body part. I might note that the light rattled noisily enough that I decided I was going to remove it despite how promising such a function as a working headlight on any motorized or electrified transportation device unarguably is.
The board is not able to climb the same hill my uglier, cheaper, heavier Skatebolt e-board with the same advertised motor output can. Even when pressing the silly “turbo mode” button that bewilderingly is timed...certainly that was a rough draft edit we won’t be seeing in any future models. I really can’t see how that made it through a review panel...but it did and now I’m stuck with having to press a button any board of the same motor class readily provides...and timed?! I really just can’t fathom that level of nonsense.
The one fractionally redeemable quality of this board is its flexibility. I do enjoy the feel of a natural longboard ride in an electrified...but it doesn’t make up for the aforementioned complaints I maybe...too crassly provided here...but I’m very serious. This isn’t an expensive board, so whatever, but it’s still several hundred dollars I could have invested in a ride that I was completely certain would out perform the skatebolt or teamgee amazon counterparts that are more than 100 dollars less to buy.
I cant believe the distance I got on this board. I'm 260 lbs and this board carried me 12 miles!
You want an affordable board with lots of power. This is it.
It also comes with 2 sets of wheels, which is nice.
Love this board.
The only thing I would say is that if you dont care about the three year warranty that you can buy with Asurian, then just buy it directly from their site, because its cheaper.
