My only issue with the product is what I found out shortly thereafter. Inside the box is a paper that instructs you to register your purchase within 2 weeks to establish your warranty coverage. Unfortunately, when I went to the manufacturer's website at [...], here's what I found: a message on their warranty registration page stating "Products purchased on auction sites such as Ebay, Amazon and Craigslist, to name a few, will not be covered under factory warranty under any circumstance. BAK Industries is unable to verify whether products sold through Auction Sites are new, used, or refurbished, and as such, we are unfortunately unable to warranty such purchases. We advise using caution when buying through auction sites as you'll be doing so at your own risk."
So, while I did save roughly the cost of a night out at the movies for my family of five by buying from Amazon, I did so at the expense of foregoing a two-year warranty. Was it worth it? Only time will tell.
2010 Ford 150. The videos on BakFlip's website were a great selling point for BakFlip and also provide easy to follow video
instructions. The unit arrived in perfect condition as it was well packaged.
The installation was as easy as the video suggested. It took about 15 minutes to do the installation of the rails and bed cover. The drain lines were a little more time consumming as I had to drill out openings in the truck drain plugs and fit elbow joints to get the proper slope from the rail drain fitting. The drain hoses included with the unit were ok, but I also purchased worm clamps to ensure the lines didn't leak at the rail fitting. I would say that the BakFlip unit works as described in the Amazon's information and the BakFlip web site (it's reasonably Weather tight but NOT water proof).
Overall I'm very pleased with the BakFlip Tonneau cover -- but that doesn't mean the're aren't any "shortcomings" ? I would say that the manufacturing quality control is not as good as depicted on BakFlip's web site. Initially the unit had two leaky areas.
1) The rail drain fitting on the right side leaked at the joint -- I had to remove the fitting, add Teflon tape and reinstall
to fix the leak.
2) Another area was at the right rear hinge joint just near the truck wheel well. I had to trim some excess rubber that was preventing a snug fit at the rail and added a very small blip of silicone caulking. This helped stem the leak but not completely (still leaked about an annoying ounce or two during a rain storm).Read more ›
I bought this cover because I am in sales and needed to house a lot of literature in the back of my truck. I also use my truck quite a bit for yard-work, fishing, hunting, moving, road trips, etc. After having this cover installed for about a month, I've already been able to utilize all of its functions completely for different situations.
The weather protection... works great! Now this is subject to proper installation, which most should be able to handle on their own. It took about 30-45 minutes to put on with basic tools. One thing I would suggest is to remove the seal cups at the cab and drill an appropriately sized hole through them for the plastic drain tubes. This ensures you don't get as much splash-in from the road as opposed to if you wedged them through the half-open holes.
The cover is very easy to open and close, and can be done with minimal effort of one hand. The unit is durable, I have done the stand test and I am about 200 lbs. I have also taken my truck through an automatic spray wash several times, with a minimal amount of water ingress.
I LOVE how I can keep golf clubs, tools, and my work brochures and literature (in a weather-tight container), without having to worry about someone seeing them back there. As they say - Out of Sight, out of mind. Also with my F150 the tailgate can be locked, which gives me that much more peace of mind.
Oh, and last - why I gave it 4 stars... Its not perfect, although quality is outstanding and function is superior to other covers. Due to designs with trucks, you will never keep the bed completely sealed, and I do get a minimal amount of water in through the rear bed corners during high rain/washes. Truly I would give it a 4.5 if I were able because a 4 doesn't do it justice.
Spend the money, you will enjoy your new trunk space that frees up the inside of your truck!
