I bought this to use as a default dictionary for when I practice reading in French. As an intermediate reader in the language, I was very excited that I could have a translation dictionary built-in so that it wouldn't take me as long to look up words I didn't know. It has amazing potential for intermediate foreign language learners, but it's not quite there.
What's really good about Barron's French English Dictionary is that it recognizes verbs in many forms. For example, it will show the definition of être (infinitive) if you are on the word était (imperfect). BUT- a HUGE issue for me is with words beginning with vowels that have an apostrophe in front. What I mean by that is when there is a reflexive pronoun in front of the verb (s'être)or if "de" is in front of a word beginning with a vowel (d'eau). It's a problem because this seems to show up a lot in French.
For example, here is a portion of a sentence from La Débâcle by Émile Zola: Sous le jour finissant de soirée d'août... les tentes-abris s'alignaient...s'espaçaient régulièrement...
There has to be a way for the dictionary to include reflexive versions of the verb. Even showing the the infinitive "espacer" when the cursor is near "s'espaçaient" would be immensely helpful.
Despite that, it is still very useful. It makes reading in French a lot easy for the learner and a lot more relaxing. I can just get comfortable and read instead of spreading out the book, a dictionary and a notebook.
I give it two stars because I am using it and it is better than nothing, but it is a thoroughly inferior product. One would think that Barron's would be reluctant to show such incompetence, but apparently not.
When you move the cursor to a word (let's say "hardiment"), a display automatically appears at the bottom of the screen which, in this case, would look like this:
hardiment [ ] adv (courageusement) boldly hard rock
[ ] m MUS le ~ hard rock hardware [ ] m INFORM
"Hardiment" you are meant to understand, means "boldly". The reason for the other clutter is that the dictionary simply adds as much text as can fit into the two-line space. So, "hard rock" is the next French word in the dictionary (the second "hard rock" is the English meaning), and "hardware" is the next (French) word after that. In the display, only the first word is in bold. It is always a minor task to figure out the information, and sometimes it is very confusing (even after you have figured out the various symbols and abbreviations).
By hitting the Enter/arrow key, incidentally, you can enter the dictionary itself and page through it.
Very limited number of words and meanings:
Note that it is a very basic dictionary. In the book I am reading at the moment (Jules Verne, admittedly from an earlier era) there are several words on each and every page that are not found in the dictionary.Read more ›
