The 15X zoom level is very easy to use and focus, however the 40X will be difficult to use for most people.
We have this setup to look over the lake behind the house. It has been placed on a full height tripod that is made for video cameras. This makes it really stable and easy to pan and then lock into place. I did not even try the included plastic tripod.
I have uploaded 3 photos taken with a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 comparing the zooms to the normal view. Using the phones camera I was actually able to use the 40X better than I could without phone.
Don't have unrealistic expectations and you'll like it. Good compact size, light and while the included tripod is kinda flimsy it can fold down into a compact size and does the job good enough.
Only thing is the pouch included will not fit the scope with the tripod attached but no big deal
Will update after getting out to the range with it
UPDATE - forget about the plastic stand it comes with, the thing is pretty much useless if there is any kind of wind. It is not stable enough and will vibrate as you adjust the focus and windage/elevation. I put it on a tripod I had just laying around it is much better now.
at 100 yards, all levels of magnification is pretty clear, 200 yards it starts to get semi blurry and at 300 yards you'll be hard pressed to see hits in smaller calibers even with shoot and see targets. Beyond that forget about it. Best magnification is between 15X-30X. Above that and it's rather difficult to get it to focus properly, almost impossible to do with the included stand.
still a good buy given the price, but highly recommend getting a more sturdy stand to use with it. Updated to 3 stars.
Anything beyond 100yds for spotting is going to be difficult to see with this scope. And, even at 100yrds, it's not "up close and personal". 22's are hard to distinguish groupings (and that includes .223's), but my 45-70 was clearly seen. So, unless you are using larger diameter/caliber ammo, this is not going to perform well in the function that you are probably buying it for.
PS - The tripod is a joke, so don't even think you'll be using the included one. Seriously.
Possibly a camera stand would work better than the included stand, but the included stand works for light-work.
was exceptionally low and not adjustable.
If it was waterproof, I would have given this a five star. I debated buying a waterproof scope but eventually I decided that I can afford another $25 scope if it proved worthless in wet conditions. Even if I did this, it would still be a lot cheaper than a high end version.
