As a predominantly location based photographer, I am often in situations where I need an assistant, or anyone else I can find, to hold a remote speedlight(s) (sometimes two or 3). This is far easier than carrying lightstands around just in case I need them (especially for event photography where I have no control over the event and shoot locations within the event can change quickly). In the past, I noticed people were very willing to assist but either found it difficult to directly hold the speedlight in their hands or were even afraid of holding it because they might drop the speedlight. Also, while another photographer would be able to hold both an umbrella and the speedlight because he or she knew what I was trying to do, there was no way I could get non-photographers to comfortably manage both items.
My first solution was to try the Lastolite LL LU2126 Brolly Grip Kit with 20-Inch Translucent Umbrella . And while it appeared to be an easy out of the box solution for $55, like many other reviewers found, this was not Lastolite's best work (I returned it out of frustration). I then created a "Light Stick," attaching a speedlight, PocketWizard, and Umbrella adapter to a monopod. Many non-photographer types I used took to this idea but found using the monopod awkward and heavy and also requiring two hands in most cases. Realizing I needed a completely portable and easy to use solution, I decided to assemble my own solution.
The Solution Starts With this Pistol Grip
The BARSKA Accu Grip is a simple solution to create a handheld (single hand) "light gun." Construction is very solid, reminding me of the pistol grip on some handguns. The material feels as if it's made from the same plastic as Glock handguns. As another reviewer noted, this grip feels a little smaller than you would expect. However, I find this better for my needs because it provides compatability with a wider range of hand sizes and let's my 11 year old daughter easily handle the flash when she assists. I also found it very comfortable for my average sized hands. The 1/4 20 screw that connects to the flash stand (or PocketWizard or Umbrella Stud) tightens very well and stays tight and unlike some reviewers noted, I found the length perfect for my use so far (once again, I am not attaching my Nikon D300s w/Grip and 70-200 2.8 to the pistol grip!). Th egrip also has a screwhole on the bottom (1/4 20) for attaching the entire setup to a tripod.
For my use, I attach a short umbrella bracket using a stud adapter to the grip. I then mount (usually) a PockeWizard to the top of the umbrella bracket using a stud. The flash attaches to the PocketWizard and you are all set. I even used the setup with a Pixel Pro External Flash Battery Pack For Nikon SB-900 SB900 Flashgun as SD-9 placed on the grip- all with no problems. Mount a small umbrella (just like the Lastolite brolly grip uses). Broken down, the entire setup fits in any of my bags (using the Domke F-2, F-1x, and F-802 at the moment) and if you attach a ring to the bottom of the pistol grip, you can also hang the entire assembled setup from a carabiner on our camera bag to keep it ready. Total cost amounts to about $15 (I only needed the grip) for a solution better than the Lastolite. If you need to purchase both the grip and bracket, add another $10. Buy a cheap umbrella for another $10 if needed. The end result is a highly portable, scaleable, easy to setup, and easy to hold "light gun" that you can get nearly anyone to use when assisting you.
The product is definitely a good buy for my purpose. I doubt I would ever want to mount my DSLR to the grip however. If you are using your DSLR for video, you are way better off looking at rigs specifically designed (and priced) for that purpose.
When Amazon suggested this might be an item I'd be interested in, they were right! I figured I probably wouldn't use it often, but for the price, I couldn't resist. I figured it would be good for handheld home movies, at least, when I'm not getting paid to carry my tripod around.
Like another reviewer mentioned, there's no longer a little "spike" on the mounting surface to keep your camera from rotating...just a hole there. That's good, because who wants a spike sticking into their camera?
Yeah, it's plastic, it's hollow, and it's light. Toy-like? No. Would you really want this to be a heavy iron handle attached to your camera? It has a really nice plastic finish...the exact same finish as my Lumix GH1...which is the main camera I'll probably use it with. The rectangle spot on the back of the handle is a rubberized area, making it even more comfortable to hold.
I have average sized man hands, I guess, and I like the fit. Larger hands might have a problem with this, however.
But, they still didn't get it perfect. As others mentioned, the 1/4-20 threaded stud is too long for some cameras. It needs to be shortened by about two threads. It fits my Lumix GH1 and my Lumix ZS3, but not my Fujifilm W3 or my 35mm Olympus OMG SLR...or it's auto winder grip...the stud bottoms out in the mounts before getting tight.
Removing the existing foam rubber mounting surface and replacing it with a thicker piece of foam rubber would probably fix it, but aside from the fact I shouldn't HAVE to do this to a brand new product, and don't want it to look "hacked" if I don't do a good job of it. Putting a rubber or metal washer on it as a spacer would fall into the "hacked" category IMHO...I'm not doing that.
If they will make one with a shorter stud on it, I'd be happy to purchase another one!

Others have also noted a sharp screw protruding through the deck that needed to be filed off. However, on the grip handle I received, there is a hole in the rubber deck, but no sharp screw tip. Well below the rubber deck surface level, there is what appears to be the hollow end of a roll pin, but nothing that needed to be filed or drilled out of the way.
My guess is that either the manufacturing specs have been changed to answer some of the cited problems, or the manufacturing tolerances are just so erratic that you won't know what you'll be getting until you get it. In any case, it seems as though quite a few of these grip handles will require some modification before they are usable.
The grip is also a bit on the small side for an adult sized hand. I cut a few pieces from a bicycle inner-tube and stretched them over the handle (2 layers) to make it large enough to fill up my hand a little better.
One other complaint I have is that the non-textured finish on the plastic makes it a tad too slippery to feel like I have a secure grasp of the camera. I used the ridged section of the bicycle tube on the outer layer, which helped remedy that shortcoming too.
Bottom line is that there aren't many competing products in this product's price range. So, get out the file, or the X-Acto knife, or the old bicycle tube, or whatever you need to "MacGyver" it up, and you'll end up with a usable camera grip handle. However, if you just want a perfect-out-of-the-box solution, you should probably skip this one and buy one of the more expensive alternatives.
