My God what a beautiful shell this is! it totally changed the look of my Switch to something unique and amazing! The price on all this Switch stuff no matter who you buy from is a tad overpriced but given how popular the Switch is right now its all about supply and demand and the market demands this stuff. It literally looks and feels like I have a brand new Switch which is awesome. Even my wife was super impressed by it as was one of my sons.

The package arrived SUPER FAST which was awesome given it came from the state of Washington and I live clear over in Ohio. Took only 2 days to get to me. That's almost unheard of when I order anything. The package was nicely put together and all the parts were secure in the little plastic container. All the parts were undamaged and in perfect order. I was missing the multi-colored directional round buttons for the left joy-con but I had no intentions of using the colored buttons anyway as I wanted to stick with a purely black and white build for my Switch. So I don't care about the red/yellow/green/blue buttons thankfully or I might have been a little ticked off, lol.

Installing the console back-plate was SUPER easy. My twin 2yr old boys could combine their brain power and probably figure out how to do it, that's how easy it was. Take a few screws out pull the back-plate off. Unscrew the game card reader screw and then unscrew the kickstand screws. Super simple and reverse steps to putting the new one on. Super easy. MAKE SURE YOU KEEP TRACK OF WHICH SCREWS GO WHERE!! IT 100% MATTERS!!! You MUST watch out for this!! After that your done with that part. Took me a whole 5 minutes to do that part.

Installing and gutting the joy-cons is where you HAVE TO BE CONFIDENT in your DIY abilities!! You HAVE to be or you will screw something up or break something. You HAVE to be EXTREMELY sensitive and careful with removing every single part of the innards of a joy-con. You should be using an ifixt tool kit or something similar to that quality of tool. You will want to use tweezers at ALL times and not your bulky fingers. Especially when pulling ribbon cables. These are very easy to snap and break. Not to mention opening the retention pieces for ribbon removal. DO NOT FORCE ANY PART OUT! You will break it! instead apply light pressure and maybe wiggle a tiny tiny bit to the pieces that are being a pain for you. I also needed to replace my left joy-con's thumbstick as my original one was messed up and would drift to the left real bad while playing a game. So I bought a new joy-con on eBay for $8 and installed that while I was doing all this so it worked out great and saved me another tear down.

All in all it was a good experience to do this myself. I LOVE trying things like this that take time to do and knowing if I screw something up I will pay for it, literally. If you are doubtful about doing this yourself I MUST insist you still try! There are tons and tons of YouTube videos with detailed step by step tear-down and reassembly for the left/right joy-con. I personally used the YouTube channel "JerryRigsEverything". He has a VERY detailed breakdown and reassembly video for the console back-plate and both joy-cons. I used his and had no issues at all even though I didn't need to watch most of it.

Some things to add just because: When you are reassembling the joy-cons you must be conscious of how tight you are tightening some of the screws as that will affect how your buttons press. Like the b,a,y, and x buttons especially. Tighten to tight and the buttons will not work properly. To loose and things will move around inside the joy-con. You have to find just the right "zone" for the controllers buttons to function. Same with the R/L buttons.

When removing the joy-con outer screws make sure you are using a Tri-wing screwdriver!! People seem to get a Phillips screwdriver confused with a Tri-wing screwdriver. Don't!!!!! You need a special Tri-wing to get into both joy-cons. Also remember these tri-wing screws are incredibly easy to strip. My best advice to just push as hard as you can into the screw with your tri-wing screwdriver and SLOWLY turn while making sure to watch the screw to make sure it is turning and you aren't stripping it. Not enough pressure and they strip like no other screw I have ever seen. Its crazy how "cheap" feeling the tri-wing screws feel.

Make sure you remove the inside ribbon cables with a nice pair of tweezers! Do not use your fingers!! The ribbon cables WILL BREAK super easy! Best to just open the ribbon retention bars and slowly and carefully pull the ribbon cable out with a pair of tweezers. Same with just about every other part inside. If you can get it with a pair of tweezers instead of using your fingers then do it!! So many small pieces and so many things that break incredibly easy, Best to be safe than sorry.

Final thing: This is not an easy task for someone who is not good with DIY stuff or who is doubtful of their abilities. The joy-cons are complicated. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. These guys who say it was super easy and its not as hard as it looks are either lying or are just blessed with the ability to do stuff like this in EZ mode. Most people will find this challenging and nerve wracking. All together it took me 4 hours to get everything done and 5 minutes of that 4 hours was spend installing the Switch's back-plate. The rest of the 4 hours was spent on the joy-cons. its a heck of a job. Some people can do it in an hour while others like me who are super paranoid and are extremely overly careful take hours and hours. I would say for the average person it would take 3 hours or so just from the comments I have seen by other people.

Good luck if you buy this! Its a super fun experience and I had a lot of fun doing it! The end result was well worth it and the times spent. I hope it is for you also!

Looks Great, But the Molding is a Little Flawed

I wish that Nintendo made official Joy-Con colors like these, and an alternate with a D-Pad. I would buy them in a heartbeat. These shells from BASSTOP are good, but they come with some flaws that weigh down what could otherwise be a perfect product. These shells definitely aren't for everybody since you need to assemble them yourself. Look up some Youtube videos before buying to get an idea of what you're getting into and follow it carefully during assembly. The most important thing is to go slow and be extra careful, as there a lot of different ways things can go south.

I would also recommend using something to keep track of all the screws like this Magnetic Mat: Delcast MT02 Magnetic Non-Slip Project Mat for Smart Phone, Laptop and Electronics Disassembly . This thing is a godsend when it comes to putting the Joy-Cons back together because a lot of those screws are really small, about the size that you would find in eyeglasses and are easily lost. Being able to keep track of exactly where each screw goes is invaluable and will save you a lot of headache in the future. Take pictures as well if you're not confident that you'll be able to remember where the ribbon cables go or something.

You also may want to look into getting an iFixit Toolkit or something similar, which will also help immensely with assembly. Specifically you want to have a Pry tool, 1-2 pairs of tweezers (particularly one with a needle point), a magnetic screwdriver with bits for small Tri-Wing and Phillips head screws, and maybe a Spudger.

Aside from the DIY aspect, the most glaring flaw with these shells is that they don't always fit properly and may need to be sanded down in some places. I ran into problems with all three shells when I was putting my Switch together, the right Joy-Con being the worst of it though your mileage will vary because each piece is molded slightly differently.

- The right side of the Switch Backplate was very rough and needed to be sanded so that the right Joy-Con could slide on properly.
- The Kickstand was completely unusable with the one provided. The Kickstand slot is too small and the White Kickstand itself is too large. I tried to sand down the Kickstand but ended up using the default black one that came with my Switch instead. It's noticeably more stiff since the slot is a little too small and I didn't sand it down, but still very usable.
- There's something off about the way the right side of the Backplate was molded because after assembly the Backplate is not completely flush with the console and makes it tighter in the original dock to the point that the console gets slightly stuck. It's worth noting that I also have a tempered glass screen protector installed which adds to the tightness in the dock. I haven't tried to take it apart and fix it yet.

- The slot for the Minus Button was a little too small on the Left Joy-Con and I needed to sand it down so that the button would actually depress properly.
- There's a little bit on excess plastic around the outside of the left Joy-Con. I left it as is because it doesn't impact anything but it's slightly annoying when holding it.

- The slot for the Right Joy-Con Release Button was too tight and needed to be sanded down so that the button would depress properly. This would have been a major issue had I not noticed it right away and slid the Joy-Con onto the Console before fixing it.
- The screw holes for attaching the Right Analog Stick to the shell are not molded properly. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is but I think that the holes are not drilled quite deep enough because I can't get the screws to go in all the way. The Stick is a little loose because of that and I'm not sure how to fix that. I'm planning on leaving it alone for fear of causing damage and making the problem worse.
- The molding near the Plus Button or perhaps along the rail where the Right Joy-Con attaches to the Switch is off in some way I have yet to identify. The Joy-Con cannot close properly around the Plus Button without the Button becoming impossible to depress. Right now the screw is not completely screwed in to fix that problem but I'm planning on opening the shell later to try and fix it properly. I already tried sanding down a few things but it doesn't seem to have helped much and it's nearly impossible to tell where exactly the problem is.

I had no other problems when assembling my shells so I consider myself fairly lucky, the slots for all the other buttons and the triggers work flawlessly. I'm not sure if there are potential problems with the included color buttons because I liked the original black buttons better and used those though. If the shells come with screws do not use them under any circumstances, use only the originals. There have been many reports of included screws being too soft and breaking upon screwing them in and it's not worth the trouble. I think that they have since stopped shipping with screws, otherwise I would have docked another star because that is completely unacceptable.

I think that the installation experience would be about the same with the other shells, but as I said before your mileage will vary as each shell is molded slightly differently. I have heard that the Translucent Shells are made of a harder plastic, making it more difficult to insert screws and sand things down as needed. Not to mention that if you have a problem with the Right Joy-Con shell like I did you will be able to see where you needed to sand it down from the outside which could detract from the quality. I don't know if that's actually true though, but I plan on buying a set of Translucent Joy-Con Shells for another Switch later so we'll see.

Great product. Having done a lot of shell replacements before on other handhelds like psp. Ds. 3ds etc. These are some of the best shells I've worked with. They are very close to the original. Dpad works great and is close in size to the original buttons so fits in my TPU jopycon covers nicely. The HORI dpad is slightly better, but having the missing functionality that the HORI doesn't have due to it being a third party non-wireless joycon makes this the best choice. Keep in mind this is an advanced installation but if you've done a DS or PSP before it's way easier. Know what you are doing and don't complain about it if you break something, that's your fault, not Nintendo's, and not that manufacturer. As I said these are some fo the best replacement shells I've ever used, the button prints are disappointing for such a high price product though.

Came way earlier than expected. Box comes with parts and a qr code that links to a sped-up YouTube video of a guy taking apart the joycons and putting them on new shells. You need a specialty Nintendo tri-wing screwdriver, tweezers, a very small precision Phillips screwdriver (the one sold with most Nintendo repair kits with that tri-wing screwdriver are too big) and maybe a prying tool. I bought a spare pair of joycons just for this mod because I thought there was a good chance I would screw up and break them. By no fault of the manufacturer, you do have to work with absolutely itty bitty screws, springs, cables and so on and losing anything would basically mean you've probably lost all hope of succeeding. I did this after work when I was exhausted so it took me a few hours while being fairly cautious, but it might be possible to do it much more quickly. It's a good kit that does what it says on the tin, but don't do this if you have a hard time handling absolutely tiny objects like 2mm long.

I found it to be a fairly straightforward installation, however, there was some additional flashing that had to be trimmed off in the molding process.
The right joy-con shell had a section that was too thick for it to close properly with all the components inside. It required some additional work, but still a fun process.

I got the say the Japanese SFC color layout is my most favorite Nintendo console design. White background + Red Yellow Green & Blue, and a D-pad. So when I see this I think it's a MUST for me to grab and the DIY is quite fun for me. (First Time I am doing this kind of customization)

They offered a video for how to do it, I think it is good. But I still recommend do the customization ONLY IF you really know how to do it, or its risk is very high for you not getting a decent finished product. and here I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you TRY NOT TO DISCONNECT all the connectors within the Joy-Con, especially the ribbons, it will be much easier for you to find the correct parts and reassemble them later on. and try to peel all the double sided tape and put them in the new cases.

However, I felt the product is decent but not good enough, the cuts are not perfect, the screw holes in the first picture is over-sized hence cannot be fasten well enough. The buttons are printed lightly and easily my B button was disappeared. The Right Joy-Con is not perfect matched, I have to leave a little gap in order to press the "+" button (I think the cut didn't leave enough space for the conductive rubber).

In conclusion, I DO NOT recommend this product for the overall quality and price (2 Shell sets can buy a Joy-Con set for this holiday), just stick with your original Nintendo Joy-Con, and do some stickers things, unless you're really a DIYer with skills and prefer appearance over quality.
