A big challenge I had with this old bike: Only one of the bolts could cross unobstructed. No matter how I set the holes, there was always a tube or excess metal in the way to prevent the other bolts from reading the other side. Thus I was forced to drill out the remaining holes.
As far as the bottom bracket, I found a Shimano BB-UN55 68 x 113 - but a 68x110 would have been the perfect size for this particular bike.
The hardware is definitely high quality - but absolutely no instructions so you are completely on your own to figure out the details. It does have a "L" and "R" to let you know what side the pieces go on - that is it. Thus the 4 as opposed to 5 star.
Installation was involved but not impossible. I sanded down the inside of the tube in order to get a nice clean fit. They recommend using a press to install this part but as I didn't have one I instead used the screws to pinch the piece in, which in the end worked out for the better. The process was like this:
1) Position the inserts in the tube across from one another
2) Screw in the bolts supplied (make sure that the insert holes are lined up as best as possible)
3) Slowly tighten each of the screws (I did 4 rotations at a time on each bolt. I also tightened them like you would car lug nuts so opposite sided bolts instead of going in a circle) I know this takes forever but it'll be worth it in the end. If this thing gets too stuck it's game over and out comes the blow torch to try an get it out)
4) Once the converter is fully seated, you are ready to go.
After installation I put a standard Euro crank set in and that's it. I've never had an issue with the product and anytime someone sees it they want to learn more about it.
I haven't seen a great deal of variation in products from different manufacturers. I went with this one because it was inexpensive.
I highly recommend this part to anyone looking to upgrade their old American style crank. It works great!
The installation went very smoothly on the second go, as I had it flipped left-for-right the first time. No big deal for me, although I could see if finesse wasn't used it could have been a bit more of a chore. I've been using a standard Shimano bottom bracket cartridge for a couple hundred miles without issue. On my bike, there wasn't any metal that needed shaping, but I was probably lucky.
By and large, it's unobtrusive and only protrudes from the original bottom bracket housing by several millimeter on either side and has the same outside diameter.
All in all, if comes to pass that I need to do another conversion I won't hesitate to use another one of these.
